Thank you everyone for the responses!

My feed store had liquid permethrin (Permectrin II) which is supposed to last up to 2 weeks so I got that and Sevin. I pulled everyone out of the coop and blocked them off in one end of the run after I removed all of the straw on the ground (about a bales worth) just in case. Removed every last scrap of bedding; sprayed the entire coop out twice with a hose and then soaked every nook and cranny with permethrin spray; I even sprayed the wooden fence behind the coop. The bottle had directions for treating poultry with no age warnings so I mixed a topical dosage and sprayed all the chickens under both wings and vent. The babies got a drop or 2 on the back of their necks. The coop was left to dry and air out untill late evening at which time put in a thin layer of pine shavings and let the chickens back in.

I also found the spinosad later in the afteroon at a garden supply store so I have that for the next cleaning. And thank you for the tips about the Poultry protector and fipronil.

Has anyone used the fipronil on younger birds or chicks? The quick reading I did said that fipronil is toxic to chickens but may be used on water fowl. Anyone done any research on this?

At this point I'm planning on cleaning and spraying out my other coops within the next week since the mites are on the property. I'll dust all the adult birds and I'm going to need to establish a previtative routine.

Just got a message from DH - *looks* like the coop is clean and everyone is doing well

Be aware that one treatment once will not be enough for continued lice/mite maintenance on the property/coops. Since there are wild birds there will always be re-infestation of lice/mites/worms which is why we use Ivermectin (equine) paste 4x/year and organic Poultry Protector 1x/month for external preventative maintenance on the hens and coop and Rooster Booster Multi-Worm for one week every month. The only time we had lice was from juveniles that shipped to us from a breeder - they came with lice so we immediately treated them w/ Poultry Protector per label instructions. By 2nd day no more lice and we felt comfortable using it because there are no restrictions on frequency of use.

I've used Neem Oil on my raised garden veggies and don't find it effective enough for parasite/worm/insect control and since it is oily I don't like to gunk up chicken feathers. For scaly leg mite preventative maintenance we use vitamin E oil massaged into the hens' feet (even their combs/beaks/wattles/toenails and no oily residue on feathers if done at roost time to allow safe natural vitamin E to soak into skin) once a month. Of course with only 5 hens we have the time to do their treatments once a month so everyone has to do what works for their flock.

Ok friends

My turner just went out my hovobater. I thought just keep it as a. Hatcher. Problem is i have turkey eggs coming along with some bblbarnie eggs. aND I have pp eggs on The counter waiting to go in....

I have a brinsea 20 for the turkey but one i will have two dos. Chix eggs on the counter plus 2 doz coming in the mail.. Shall I get the scary janoel, another poopy hovabator with turner, or an octo 40? Aha I know what I want but I'm so high in Elevation justifying the money is hard. Then again my elevation is so difficult shouldn't I get the best possible Hatcher?

incubator warehouse sells replacement motors. They are easy to replace and do not cost too much.

Keep one as a spare.

Thank you! I am doing my reading and working on coming up with a preventative routine for the property. I'm planning to respray the coop in 2 weeks (as recommended by Ron and the instructions on the Permetricin II). At this point I am just very glad that I *seem* to have gotten the initial infestation. Thank you for taking the time to tell me what works for you. It is very much appreciated.

Ron always seems to have the perfect advise. Kern

I have burnt out two motors from hatching so much in my Geneses 1588's. I need to order a spare because I am sure to burn one out again this year.

The are $10.00 plus shipping.

While doing chicken chores this afternoon I found a few shells under the broodie Brahma. Not sure if a pen mate got the eggs or something else. I gave her a couple of the pyncheons eggs and she's in isolation within the coop. She was madder than the proverbial wet hen until she noticed the eggs, all has been forgiven for turning her sideways to get her into the pen.

Hi all,

Any idea what is up with this chick's feathers? She is a splash bantam orp & the feathers on her back are coming in strangely. They are not curled up like a frizzle but they have sort of a "messy" look to them.
700

They also feel rougher than the other chicks' feathers.

I gave my broody 5 cornish cross chicks. she is so happy to have chicks, but it wil be interesting to see how she does raising these little yet soon to be big "monsters".

Love those double-laced feathers! It will be interesting to see how she deals with them growing so much so fast. I have 22 that are 5 weeks old in a separate pen inside the big pen. They have the HUGEST legs I have ever seen, even on a Cornish X. They have been having some trouble walking and one girl in particular sits back with her legs out front. She is not even one of the bigger ones. I have been letting them out daily for several hours or longer for the last week or so to make them move round and get some exercise, but have to lock up a few of the layers when I do because they like to go pluck the few feathers the meaties have. The pullet seems to be getting around better now that they are being made to get off their butts. I am also hanging the feeder pretty high so they have to stand up to eat

Geeking out. Got four eggs today. So now all the girls are laying (and they're all using the nesting boxes!).
Woo Hoo!!! (especially the part bout all using the nest boxes. I have one pullet that just started laying and does it everywhere except the nest box. I think it may be Stubby, the one-footed Ameraucana. I don't believe I have ever seen her inside the coop so she my not even know what a nest box is. I find them all over the pen and the last couple under the coop where the ramp is just out of my reach. We are in the process of revamping a storage vault into a coop that will be about 4 times the size of the current one and it will have easier access for her. She manages to fly up to the top of the outside nest boxes to roost so not sure why she won't go into the coop.

Quote: Some one posted a short video of a Momma chicken taking her baby ducklings to a big puddle for a swim. She was cautiously supervising from the shore, but seemed Ok with it. I'm not so sure it would work as well the other way around!

i just traded three leghorns for olive eggers. they are all black and white and one even has feathered feet. they are such cuties
Sounds like great trade! I love the dark olive color that my 1 adult OE lays and wish I had more!

So eggcited =) going to Sacramento tomorrow to pick up blue and green amauracuana (can't spell it) eggs, so yay =) and I'm ordering some d'uccle hatching eggs and getting Turkey eggs too. And I can't wait till May to get some gorgeous duck eggs and sumatras.... I'm hatching in my mind already =D

Road trip canceled/postponed/altered due to lack of vehicle maintenance by my sister =(

Quote: Wow....only 2 months old and crowing??? I have been very lucky with the few cockerels I have ended up with and they didn't crow until about 5 months old or so. I cold tell they were cockerels early enough to find them homes. I do still have 4 CCL cockerels going on 2 weeks old I need to find homes for though still...

Oh no...bad timing! Can you buy a new one at TSC?

How far long were the eggs?
