California - Northern

Our small local hardware store is doing a coop tour around our very small town on Saturday. Soo many people are getting chickenS. Could it be because of the price off eggs?

Likely and a number of other factors as well.

There is a lot of attraction to having fresh eggs but there is also a lot of nervous people out there about what the future will bring and people are finding that self sufficiency has its rewards.

So my local feed store will not take any more chickens due to the avian flu, so I put my extra cockerels on Craigslist, and someone took all of them! Same day it was awesome. Now I'm not being woken at dawn by a chorus of trumpets hahaha.

Awesome!  I sold a couple of hens on craigslist last weekend & I was really shocked at the number of replies I got in just a few hours.  There are really a lot of people out there wanting chickens right now!

That's good to hear. I'm having a tough time finding a home for my 2 Columbian or pullets. They're on Craigslist & Facebook.

Too much to hope it's a pullet?

Yes, it is a broody turkey trying shove herself into a wine box nestbox.
Goofy bird.

LOL!!!! That is hysterical!!! She is beautiful even at that angle though!

I can't count chicks even when they are hatched. This hen has 4 d'anvers, 3 silkies, & 1 more pipping.
Thanks again @chickee ! 100% viability & hatch rate for the 4 d'anvers eggs. Wow!
Awesome!!!! My eggs from her were 100% fertile too! I think she must chicken Viagra with them....

Quote: I wonder if he left out the word "dinner" in that sentence and just didn't want to say so. Anytime I have to rehome a cockerel I just assume that is what they will be used for. It is a "Don't ask, don't tell" kind of thing for me. I have no aversion to processing. In fact, I just processed by first 2 Cornish X's of the season today. (both finished out at right around 5 lbs. each!). I just prefer not to think about that with ones I have become attached too

I know the egg price is a big factor around here. They were pretty cheap right before ester, but have gone back up considerably.

Well yeah I'm sure that's what is going to happen, I feel kinda bad because they were very sweet little guys but I can't keep them.

That is the one part I hate bout hatching...there will always be cockerels to find homes for.....

X2 The worst part is hatching auto sexing breeds. Everyone wants the girls, so you get stuck with all the boys. Out of 10 GCM chicks only 2 were girls. I have been able to sell a few on FB 530 poultry but will probably have to take the remaining boys to the feed store if they still will take them.
