California - Northern

I received the report on 2 of the 3 Pita Pinta hens that died 10 days ago. I haven't had time to look up everything and make sense of it all but they were 2 very sick girls. I'm not sure what I can do to prevent this happening to any of the other birds. Maybe someone on here can interpret it for me. Here is a link to the report.

Here is the short version:

Hen A - Pericarditis, mutifocal, nodular, lymphocytic, chronic
- Nephritis, multifocal, interstitial, lymphocytic, chronic
- Peritonitis, lymphoplasmacytic and histiocytic, moderate, multifocal, chronic

Hen B - Oviduct, adenocarcinoma, severe, widespread
- Lungs, metastatic adenocarcinoma, multifocal, early stage
- Salpingitis/yolk peritonitis, moderate, chronic, pleocellular

In the case summary, Davis noted that both hens had a large, cystic, persistent right oviduct. They said that it is unusual to see persistent right oviducts that are this large and theorized that this might be a breed-related characteristic. They did say that there was no evidence of Marek's disease in peripheral nerves and brain. And the test for avian flu was negative.

Well that is a relief that it was not Marek's relates. It sounds like you would not have been able to do anything for these girls. So sorry about the loss.

I agree on the north south and central thing...
IM in Northern.. That puts me in the foothills just a little jump over to Nevada.
I live just below Valley Springs. About 30 mins from Stockton.
Hi there! I'm close to you, over here in Ione, Amador County. {see me waving?} As far as north vs south, some claim Bakersfield, or Fresno, but I agree with those who identify the Grapevine as the line of demarcation between Central and South, and the Pacheco Pass, San Benito County area as the line of demarcation between Central and North. :::Ahem::: to the one who tried to claim that San Francisco was part of Central California ... I wouldn't say that with your out loud voice if you were anywhere in the vicinity of the Bay Area. I suspect folks have been 'disappeared' for things like that and using that "Frisco" term too LOL!

Welcome to the thread! We don't really pay too much attention to exactly where you are from. We like to say that Northern CA is a "State of mind".

I found an interesting bit of info about improving hatchability of stored eggs. @ronott1 ....I don't know if this relates to your experiments on pre-incubating eggs before shipping or not..

Edited to correct spelling
Thanks for posting this! I have saved it and will be referring to it.

I can't get the egg farmer to understand correct storage and collecting of eggs. Last batch, 72 egg, likely 30 days worth, most of them small end up.....and dirty...Some even had egg yolk on them....Then he wonders why only 60% hatch....

added: I have talked him through this several times this year and last.
