More bad news about my Pita Pinta. My farm friend received the lab report from Davis for the 3rd hen that we had die. I haven't seen the report yet, but Jenny emailed me this info this morning:

1-Yes Lg cystic,persistant Right oviduct....10cm fluid filled
2-Salpingitis/yolk peritonitis...inflation due to the yolk
Secondary bacterial infection of the coelom cavity----cavity had moderate amount of dark orange,opaque,dense foul-smelling fluid...Coelomic swab growth showed...Gallibacterium anatis

So, I have lost 3 out of 7 of my original hens and all 3 had cystic right oviducts that measured 10 cm in diameter. These hens were not even 2 years old. We will be processing 2 F1 hens and 2 F2 pullets next week. We will be looking carefully at their oviducts.

Broody #1 is feeling awfully thin. I'll be picking up chicks for them all on Friday, but in the mean time, is there anything I can do to fatten her up? I take them all out every day and they get some insect and corn heavy scratch in addition to their feed and water. I was wondering if I should make them all a suet-heavy flock block or something. Anyone have any thoughts or advice?

Definitely sounds like a genetic thing, perhaps in that line only.

Maybe some Grower/finisher or a Game bird feed. I buy Purina Game Bird Chow for my quail and it is 30% protein.

Has anyone shared with you about their Pita Pintas regarding the same problem? It would be good to know aforehand should someone want to start a Pita Pinta breeding project. If it's a problem in all Pita Pintas or is it just from the line you purchased stock. Wonder if anyone else has done necropsies on P/P's with the same outcome?

If it is just an isolated strain then there'll be some serious culling - maybe one breeder's whole flock. But if it is inherent because of genetics it will take years to breed enough diverse stock before future breed generations are hardy to resist - if ever. These kind of "if's" is one of many reasons I'm glad I don't have enough property space to have "projects". Gotta respect those breeders who take the time, heartache, and money, to pursue rare bird breeding.

My husband found a baby magpie that can't fly. I don't know why. It looks fully feathered to me. He put it in with my 2 month old chickens. I don't want it in there because of disease. He doesn't get it. I am going to be really upset if my chickens suffer. Esp after everything I have read on these boards. What should we do with it? I don't want it anywhere near my chickens but they have already been exposed.
