I am thinning out my flock, and sadly, she needs to be sold. She is a 3 year-old, black Wyandotte bantam hen. We showed her at at our county fair, and the judge seemed to like her. I would consider her to be breeder quality. She would make a fantastic 4-h bird as well, since she has been used in Showmanship before.

I don't have your expanse of land but we did find leaving on the patio light and using predator-eye light great as night critter deterrents. Too bad we can't fire a weapon in our little cottage backyard as I would love to obliterate the lousy field mouse chewing my tomatoes! The mice are more difficult to trap than the rats.

@mlheran Western Farm Center carries King feed, which makes mini pelleted feed. My girls waste less of it. King donates feed to the PPBA show, and all the big show breeders like it.

If they start laying eggs before mid October, they usually lay through the winter and molt the next fall--1.5 years instead of 1. The second winter they will not lay the same but some breeds will keep laying. Those breeds are winter layers, Rocks and some others. You can check the hendersons chicken chart--look for a snow flake in the breed description.

Buckeye is the first breed listed that is a winter layer.
Thank you

OMG! Broody #3 has abandoned her lone chick at 4 weeks and returned to roosting with the other pullets. Poor Peep is going NUTS in the run calling for her. There are still several of the 7 week olds in the nesting box on the floor where they've all been with #3 for the past few weeks. I sure hope Peep figures out either getting on the roost (which I know he can) or jamming into the box.
