California - Northern

I just discovered this thread – thought I was all by myself, being so far west of the East Coast. Boy, was I wrong! I don't know if I belong here. If I look west, and I could see through the mountains, I would be looking at somewhere between Santa Cruz and Monterey. Anyway, it is good to know there are so many Californians that are members of BYC.
Paicines is in San Benito County.

You live in a very pretty place!

Did you bring chickens with you?

It is nice during the spring, but not so nice during this drought.

Yes, have chickens, but I lost control of the breeds – they are all mixed up. There are 18 chickens of unknown breed, one Royal Palm tom and hen, three Slate gray hen turkeys. In 2009, I started out with Brahman chickens, but then I took in other breeds and now I am out of control. I don't mind – my eggs come in different colors – kind of pretty.

You guys are slipping, it's been so long since I logged on and I was only behind 114 posts.

DD is now done with 4-H. She came back with blues in both poultry & pigeon showmanship. Driving home it hit her, she then asked where she could go for a chicken fix in the Salem-Portland area.

We took 4 pigeons, a bantam silver Phoenix hen and the tiny old dutch bantam, she would have come home with all blues in conformation if the pen mate hadn't decided to fight with the dutch and mess up her comb after county fair.

Congratulations to her! We decided not to do 4H this year because we are always away during the summer so we never get to go to the fair. Also my son has too many other activities.

I think I have a broody...she has been sitting for 2 days & I would love to let her hatch out some chicks. She is young though; she just started laying a month ago. Is that too young to be good mom?

So apparently I am supposed to wait a week to see if she will stick with it before I put fertile eggs under her; is that correct? Anyone have hatching eggs in the Bay Area that I could get quickly if I need to?

uFertile eggs from TJ's is another option, not one I have since the 1 in Medford doesn't carry them.

That is great!

Are the fires out up there?

You never know about broodies. Some are good at any age while others are terrible.

This time of year papas poultry often has deals on hatching eggs.

Contact him to see what he can do for you. He is in Redding so shipping would be by truck.
