Most of my birds are molting now, and have been for several weeks. They look so bad right now.

My chickens look bad; but my coop and run look worse. A serious case of feather bomb here at my house! And eggs have just re-started after about 2 weeks of nada.... It got hot and stayed hot here for a while...

Do chickens ever molt before they ever lay an egg?

Mine did. I got started pullets a year ago, from Murray McMurray. They started molting their first week with me, and laid their first egg on New Years Day.

I did a post but I don't know where it went.... again, but mine are only 22 weeks old....

Well i guess we areabout as north as you can go. I live 11minutes from the oregon border in Hornbrook. Anyone live near me?

It is called the juvenal molt. It is normal.

It is usually sometime after week 17 or so and Australorps do molt like that. Sometimes it is more of seeing feathers on the ground and them looking a lot better.

Australorps at 22 weeks old at this time of the year will likely start laying a week or so later than normal.

Let us know when they start laying!

I'm in Crescent City, so you're 8 miles closer to Oregon than I am. Less than 3 hours from me, too! OR4HMom is about halfway between us--around Medford/Grants Pass.

Not anymore, I started 1st grade in Hornbrook. That was before they had a Kindergarten.
