Hello.

We live in San Jose and just started with chickens. We bought chicks at Half Moon Bay Feed & Fuel as I called around and the SJ stores didn't have any. When we drove there, they had one black sex link and quite a few black jersey giants. We took the sex link and two of the jersey giants. They're ninety-x percent (forgot the exact number) likely to be female . They were born Feb 11th so are almost 2 months old now.

We didn't know anything about breeds when we bought them, only picked this type because that's all they had at the store. We've now learned the jersey giants are extra big, which is not ideal for the small home depot coop we bought (which is advertised as comfortable for four, but have learned on here perhaps better for regular/medium sized chickens). Plus variety would be more fun anyway, I woulda got another type if they had it. I suggested to my wife we eat the biggest one and try buying another type chick. She suggested how bout sell it since she's not super happy with the idea of killing/cleaning/eating a chicken we raised. Then I told her there's a norcal area on the forum I've been reading that maybe has other bay area people and maybe someone would trade us some other type of chicken for this one, anything's possible!

Jersey Giants are a dwindling American heritage breed and I love that you got a couple hens. They are getting rarer as people instead are desiring faster growing breeds and ultra productive egg layers (Sexlinks) who get spent after only a couple years -- but really, this JG breed is lovely and worth saving. I would suggest not eating her and you may find both girls so endearing and entertaining that you'll want to keep them. Don't expect huge eggs as pullets - it will take a while to get past the medium size. They are a slower maturing breed because they are larger. I envy that you even found a feed store that sold JGs! If you do add another hen to your flock make it a breed 6-lb or more to match your big Sexlink and JGs in size. Javas are another American heritage bird that is a larger bird and slower growing like the JG and a good match in size and a good egg-layer. GL whatever you decide -- read all the internet sites you find on JGs to give you a good background about them. JGs have been bred in the Blue color too but probably only private breeders have those.

So, other than hi, anyone in the area wanna trade me some other type of non-giant chicken (ideally young) for a 7-week old Black Jersey Giant? Here's a pic today, we're using that baby fence to keep them out of our vegetable garden until I get the time to put in a real fence and they are hanging out by it now, but they have a whole yard to play in. Even a swing hanging from a tree they haven't swung on other than when I put them there.

Hi there, If you want them Just as pets I know people that Have seramas, They do lay, But Very small Eggs, As the seramas don't get larger than 18 oz... I will have some for sale, I don't need nor want any JGs Right now... But If you are interested in seramas Let me know!

Dont think so looks too small. Looks more like coopers hawk
It is a Cooper's, the Sharp Shins gave up on a quail dinner a couple of years ago. This is a new arrival this year, she's (?) only 16 inches tall but she walked around the pen 3 times before moving on. The next day she was on the other side of the house checking out the pigeons. I can't let the OEGB'S free range now.

I am interested in a Serama or two! I have not had one before and was very impressed with the breed, the docile and attached to people nature of some of them. I have been unable to find Serama or a silkie hen and I would really like another house chicken (my little January passed away very young and suddenly).

Any Jersey Giant that comes from a feed store is neither a true Jersey Giant nor a giant at all. My first hens were JGs, they scarcely outweighed our Dominiques by a pound. Only true breeder stock JGs will be any larger than the average hen. I remember my old JGs being decent layers of big eggs. And at 7 weeks old, those are definitely female. If for any reason you feel like making the drive, my workplace has 8 week old sexed pullets coming in on the 13th of varying backyard laying breeds. I'm sure my boss wouldn't mind taking those JGs off your hands. Lol it would be some drive though, especially with birds in the car.

I have one JG from a hatchery and she very sweet but as you say not Giant in any way. She should be as big as my Pita Rooster at least but she is no bigger than my large pitas and smaller than my larger hatchery buff orps. Now she is only about 8 months old though but doesnt look to be getting much larger any time soon.
