If you let them out frequently they should be fine. Larger birds I find dont often roost even when provided them. They are so cute running in the yard. (And the kid is too) . If you dont want your entire lawn devoured you might consider extending the run space off the 2 main doors a ways then you could alternate giving them forage areas to spend some time in. Enjoy them you will be in for a fun experience and let us know when you get your first egg.

Thanks much, will do! My understanding is that first egg (based on hatch date of feb 11th) won't be until sometime in June.

Their doors are opened every morning and they immediately run right out. And hand carried back every night after dark (dunno how to convince them to go back by themselves). I'm also thinking of opening up a hole in my back fence to let them free-range in the field back there....

What do you mean about the entire lawn devoured, I was actually kinda concerned about that, as they certainly destroyed it in their run. Will they destroy my back yard too? Will their poop kill the grass, should I try to hand-pick it out? Seems so far, besides their run, they haven't really hurt the yard and they've been out every day... seem to like hanging out on the fence line mostly where the grass is thin already... I've noticed they're super happy every time I mow the lawn tho... I don't use the grass-catcher in the back yard so all the clippings just end up spread out everywhere, and I see them eating the cuttings that ended up on the concrete. I also started using the grass-catcher on my front yard and have been spreading those grass clippings into their run, on top of whatever food scraps and poop they've left there, hoping it'll kinda compost in the run by itself without stinking or attracting too many flies, I'll see how that goes...

Welcome. You came to the right group. There is also a swap/ sell group thread but it is better to find people that live close to you. I have heard jersey giants are very nice birds. Good layers. Did you get them for their eggs? I am not looking for any more chickens but you will get good advice here

Yep, for eggs - as hobby/pets and something useful to do with food scraps from my two little girls who are almost 2 years old.

Mamma brahma hatched out 5 brahma chicks. They hatched late. First hatched yesterday (day 24) and last one hatched today (day 25). Most of my brahmas hatch on day 22.
