California - Northern

Well I lost one of the welsummer chicks last night looks like it got somewhere it wasnt supposed to be and was squished by some the other birds. It was the one who had developed a limp I think from being stepped on earlier. This is the first broody raised chick Ive had die after being alive for a week.

So sorry you lost a Wellie. I lost a 21-day-old Dom chick to a sudden seizure out-of-the-blue, gone in 60 seconds in our hands, with nothing to indicate it had anything wrong - running around, eating, drinking, foraging, a sudden scream, seizure, gasp, then gone. We had bonded and I hated losing the spunky little thing. Some chicks just don't make it while others thrive.

Wandering over from the Bay Area thread...

I just hatched some Olive Eggers, I'm trying to add some new layers to my flock, but my hatching mojo seems to have run out. From 2 dozen eggs I hatch 3 chicks, 2 were cockerels, and only 1 pullet. I set another 18 eggs that hatched this week, but only ended up with 5 more chicks...
So does anyone have day to week old chicks available?

I'm open to most breeds, but I prefer those that lay blue/green/olive/dark(er) brown eggs, breed isn't really important.

Thanks y'all!

Just thought id leave this here for the other northern Californians that are dying in the heat lol
I love it!

I had to replace my faucet timer yesterday--The misting system is up and running now! It will come on at 1:30 today and stay on for about 5 hours. If it is still over 95 then I will run it on Manual for a bit longer.

The mist make it a lot cooler out there for the chooks.

I've been leaving ice blocks outside and spraying everything down with the hose. I have 16 eggs in the incubators and they were overheating yesterday. Whew it's going to be a long summer lol

I need to put my misters on a timer. What brand did you get?

OSH had an Orbit timer on sale. It is easy to use and understand. The old one was a Nelson that did not last into a second year of use. It did not work as well. I have a splitter to run two lines of orbit misters.
