I am in Fresno County in the Foothills near Dunlap (past Squaw Valley) at about 2000' on the way to Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks. My chickens are not very happy, nothing green growing except my garden and I have that fenced off. I give them the weeds and the trimmings. but even those are sparse. Bone dry up here and everywhere I look I see dead conifers and oak trees. But, tonight it getting cooler; going down to 41°.

I buy a big bag of kale from the Grocery outlet each week and give some of it to them two or three times a week.

Yes, they do love kale and cabbage for that matter, most all brassicas are on the approved list for the birds. But, they don't seem to like the tree collards, ???.

I grew chard for them and they loved it. I have given them a mix with collard greens, kale and chard and they ate it.

My chickens are not picky though.

So what do you guys do to keep your coops clean in the winter? All summer we have been using straw over the concrete floor for easy clean up. Now with the rain the straw is turning to much and I'm left seeking rain friendly alternatives...

I started sprouting organic salad seed packets for my chickens when we had to shave our front and back yards for remodeling because there wasn't a weed in sight for months for them to forage and I had to fence off our raised garden bed! They love the sprouted greens!
