California - Northern

We just got a smoke advisory down here in the South Bay. I'm so sorry for all of you who are dealing with this in your home and cities! I hop you are all safe.

Being new to the area, I'm not used to fires like this so I've been googling about how to protect my flock. I came across this pretty standard article: https://www.communitychickens.com/care-for-chickens-during-wildfires/

Does anyone else have any tips? I know things aren't bad here yet but I remember how quickly things got bad last year so now that I have chickens I want to be prepared to best care for them.
Have a vehicle ready for evacuation. Have crates, food and water to last them a week. How many chickens do you have?

Ooh great call on the crates! I definitely need to get some more. I've got eight 14 week olds, six 9 week olds and twelve 5 week olds. I've only got one big portable cage but I'll get more now! What's the best way to crate them for emergency travel?

Not sure what you mean. I just put them in crates. Head first.

Hahaha no I don't mean how to put them in, hahaha you must have thought I was really dense! :lau

I mean what kind of crates are best to keep on hand for emergency travel for a whole large flock?

The one cage I have right now is what I used for the first week with my baby chicks; it's a large rabbit cage I inherited with the property. It would fit the babies in a pinch but I need something much bigger for the rest of the flock. I do also have a bunch of large Rubbermaid bins I can quickly poke air holes in and toss shavings into in an emergency, but for long term investment, should I get metal cages? Build wooden crates, buy plastic crates? Build a small poultry trailer of some sort? If I'm going to do it I'm going to do it right the first time hopefully!

I have varikennels for dogs They do sell crate like things for chickens but it doesn’t keep the poop in.

My friend has a pickup truck with a top on the bed of the truck. She put her chickens in that to leave the area. They roosted in that at night and free ranged her sisters yard during the day.

Not sure what the best way would be. How many chickens do you have?

I have a 2 month-old rooster that needs rehoming also if anyone is able to take him. He is a black Orpington with a few red feathers (mixed with Partridge). He has grown a lot since these pics; should be very large.
