We're still getting Newcastles reports in SoCalif so hope you guys in NoCalif are report-free to carry-on with your shows! I'm not attending anything poultry (even my local feed store) and not bringing any new birds onto the property until this Newcastles thing is OVER! We made one trip to the feed store months ago and stocked up on our favorite feed for the hens so we don't have to go back to the feed store for a long while. Some people have tracked Newcastles to a feed store in San Bernardino and a couple of backyard flocks had to be euthanized. Be careful and cautious everyone!

I am sorry to hear that NewCastles is still going down there!

@ronott1 Yep, Newcastles is hard to get rid of especially with a denser bird population here in SoCalif. My vet has been adamant for this whole year of NOT bringing any new birds onto the property until Calif has a Newcastles-free announcement. I have even refused to set out my hummingbird feeders this year. Am I paranoid? Probably! I'm so tired of irresponsible owners transferring poultry around the State until Calif reports a disease-free environment. I want a couple new birds this coming Spring but am holding off ordering anything for a while.

I've been talking to a couple of my out-of-state breeders who keep up with outside States for their shipping restrictions. One of them said that the first Newcastles reports started in SoCalif where infected chickens came across the border illegally and then infected birds from Calif went to Utah. Later, reports were springing up in the Midwest as well. Here in SoCalif Foster Farms business had to euthanize their entire poultry farm because of Newcastles. I haven't heard of any recent reports in Los Angeles or Riverside Counties but apparently San Bernardino County has the most recent December reports. That's just too close for comfort for my taste! As long as these reports stay current my vet is adamant not to transfer or bring new birds onto the property! As far as I'm concerned both North and South California is ALL our State and it can take just one careless or ignorant poultry owner to transfer/travel unawares with an infected bird to any part of our beautiful State!

We have restrictions on showing poultry at fairs and etc. here. I am not risking any new ones at my place until I hear that all is safe. I hope to hatch some pita pintas this summer from @PetRock

@ronott1 LOVE your choice of getting some rare Pita Pintas. I love getting rare breeds myself and tried a few different breeds of birds -- unfortunately we're zoned for only 5 hens/no roos -- so I can't get all the rare breeds I'd love to own. After going through a few breeds I've settled for owning the docile gentle non-combative breeds for our small backyard. Good laying hens like RIRs, Legs, Delawares, BRs, etc are great for eggs but our experience is that these layer breeds have been a bit too aggressive toward our docile girls. And surprise surprise to us we found our Dominique girls are very nice toward our aging old little Silkie girl! They actually submit to her!

Hello I’m new here and quickly becoming a crazy chicken lady. I have 6 hens and a roo (not supposed to have a roo in Fremont so don’t tell anyone.) Currently he’s wearing a collar as not to disturb the neighbors.
Drumstick is the roo and started this whole chicken craze.
Four of our hens are an Easter Egger, Silver Laced Wyandotte, Silver Sebright Bantam and a silkie (named her Lucky) that was saved from a live meat market in Oakland, all about 4 months old. Yesterday I adopted two 2 year old barred rocks. I named them Holly and Noel since I got them on Christmas Eve. Built our 12x4 coop/run from recycled materials but since at the time thought we’d have Two chickens and had No idea what chickens needed don’t like it for the 7 of them. I’m often moving things around to find the right fit. Looking forward to learning from you and hopefully meeting some of you someday.
