California - Northern

Question for all you San Francisco chicken owners. Are your birds laying yet? Out of our four, only one is currently laying. We're wondering if it's still not light enough, or because when we got them in January we didn't use lights, like the previous owner did, and it looked like two went into a moult. I have read that moulting will stop a bird from laying for 2-3 months, but they look really good now.

Anyone else having slow to start birds?

We have 7 chickens and all but one Easter Egger are laying again. 4 of them just turned 1 yr and the other 3 are 11 mos. Our oldest Barred Rock went into molt at the end of November and just started laying again 3 or 4 weeks ago. Her feathers looked beautiful for several weeks before she started laying again but her comb was not bright red. Our Black Australorp, our other BR, and our EE took a break for the winter. The first 2 started laying again 5 or 6 weeks ago but the EE laid two green eggs the middle of February and not a one since then. They free range in our 1/3 acre backyard during the day so she may have a stash somewhere but it has just been too nasty outside to do a proper search. Then we also have a Gold Sex link and two Silver Laced Wyandotes that laid eggs all winter. They slowed down to 3-4 eggs per week but did not take a break. We did not give them supplemental light.

I never thought my girls would start laying this year. We just now have started to get almost 100% production. I have 12 hens laying and we're getting 10 to 12 eggs per day.

Lighting definitely has a lot to do with egg production, if you're birds are shaded or the days are overcast you can expect a decline in eggs until the days get longer and brighter.

Hello all~
Mom is sick & dying possibly & dad has told me to post to say his Emus are free.

I think there is 10 adults, some are setting, some chicks are running loose, some chicks have been stomped by other femmales...PM me...Dad is in NORTHERN CA, in Lake County in Clearlake Oaks.
Free, Thanks & goodbye

Edited to add: My chickens have all laid, all year, all winter except the LF Cochin.

I won't be breeding using Wheatens, so he's gotta go to a new home. He is directly from Paul Smith.

Except for the fact that it would be illegal where I live, I think an emu or two would look SO cool hanging around in the pasture area of my land-lady's property. The part immediately adjacent to my back yard, where my chickens ALREADY range freely... and I have built a shed for my ginormous brooder, with her permission. She'd probably notice 'em, though...

I wish I could help with you out with the emus but my tiny yard is already overflowing with chickens.

Hi! I'm in Vacaville and I am looking for an incubator. I'd be open to homemade ones that aren't needed anymore. I am getting some fertile eggs today so the clock is ticking! Let me know if you can help out!

Thanks!

Angie
