Ron I don't sand my eggs when I hatch. I feel like the protective mucous coating would be destroyed and that would make the eggs more porous, making it easier for bacteria to get in. Since marans eggs have such a thick non-porous shell I can see how folks would think this would increase the hatch. Some chickies just can't seem to make it through that tough shell. Plus they would be much easier to candle. I personally believe that the less intervention the better. The stronger chicks are the ones that hatch by themselves and that improves the breed.

OK, OK, I have helped a chick or two (or 12) out of the shell but I really do try to resist! But once they have pipped and started to zip it's really impossible to ignore their little peeps for help! I have no idea why someone would say it only helps on shipped eggs though. I can't understand what the logic would be behind that, other than shipped eggs are harder to hatch in general so any help would be welcome.

CONGRATS on the new bator!!! How exciting! And yes 99.5 for egg temp but a degree plus or minus usually works for most (IDK personally I am very anal about this sort of thing and monitor the bator constantly to try to keep the temp right on).
Thank you Sunny Dawn

The Easter Hatch Forum started with:
Cayuse, Renee (ChooksChick) used to have some pictures on here of how she sanded the really dark brown eggs for incubation. Hopefully, she'll read this and direct you to them

Later the instructions and pictures were added. After sanding, you are supposed to apply a beta-dyne solution that looks like tea to make sure bacteria does not get in. It all sounds like too much intervention to me. If most hatchers don't even watch the eggs, would sanding really help? So for delivered eggs and Marans maybe this will work. With my last hatch(ok sounds like I have hatched a bunch, but it was only my second) I set 4 Marans eggs along with 8 EE eggs. three of the Marans eggs developed while the fourth never did anything. Two of the three were late quitters. They were developed but did not pip. I figured that the EE's killed them by playing hockey with the eggs, since there was a large difference in hatching time(the Marans hatched two days after the first EE hatched).

So with my third hatch I will try to learn from the last one, namely don't mix the eggs, especially with ones that tend to hatch early and ones that hatches late.

I will be setting some of Kim Consuls(Capayvalleychick) Dorking eggs this weekend.

Wish me luck!

Absolutely I wish you luck on those Dorking eggs from Kim. As far as that goes on any eggs you try. I will tell you though that Marans are notorious for
hatching late remember the story I was telling you about the 5 day late one???? LOL It lived to be told about too. I am working on setting up the breeders . I now have the Wheaten Marans all together for breeding & the BCMs, the Light Sussex, B/W Ameraucanas have started laying again, Splash & Blue Ameraucanas finally started laying as did the Lavender Ameraucanas. The Buff English Orpington continue to lay but I am still waiting for fertile eggs to hatch. Many have been clear but he seems to be trying so I will keep trying the eggs,
I hatched out 2 Coronation Sussex that I brought home from Cheryl's house & one Dominique chick came out to play with the 2 Black/Blue APA Orpingtons that hatched.
In Carrie's incubator I had 25 chicks hatch out for her, mostly Marans, Blues & Blacks & 5 Red Sussex. What fun............ Looking forward to you coming again. Please let me know if the Yokos don't work out. Aaron & I will replace the eggs free of charge or you can get chicks if we hatch some.

Thank you so much Karen! They are in the bator now cooking away. Didn't want to waste 1 checking fertility (should have checked the oops one, at your place, but wasn't thinking) so I just set them. I've got my fingers crossed! I am so excited about the Yokohamas! DH and I are building an enclosed run with very tall perches so they can show off those gorgeous tails.

Tell your son we said thank you! I really enjoyed my visit! Easy to see why folks speak so highly of you and your farm.

Next visit will have to be longer. Darn weather and that Pass! Makes trips during winter an interesting sport. lol

So glad you had fun. You & Steve are welcomed back anytime. The weather will get much better before we know it as quickly as time passes. Pretty soon it will be hot enough that we will becomplaining about that & turning the misters on for the chickens.....LOL
I am going to wash my first chicken today to enter her in this week end's show. Margarete is helping me. I am excited.
I have APA Black/Blue Orpingtons pipping this morning out of the pen where the chicken I am showing came out of. What fun.

SunnyDawn,

Doing a search for King Brand feed dealers and they list 1 Stop Ranch and Feed in Sparks as a Dealer.

Cool!!! That's where I shop. It's a bit of a drive for me but I stock up while I'm there and it pays off. I get the 18% flock raiser (among other things). Best prices around.
