Here he is!

Oh and do you like the splash cochin I drew a little bit ago

Hello fellow Northern Californians! I am a brand new chicken owner (bought my 5, 2-week old Barnevelder chicks on Tuesday!) I live with my boyfriend, Johnny, of 7 years in Concord (Bay Area - East Bay). We have about 2,000 sf of usable backyard space and we are trying to create a little homestead. First step, chickens! Next step, learning how to not suck at vegetable gardening. I'm hoping the book "The Backyard Homestead" will help us get on the right path. Having an organic farm is our dream for the future! So glad I joined this site!

You are in for a great adventure!

Are you going to get bees?

Post pictures when you can and ask questions if you have them.

Hello! :D We don't have any chickens yet. This is our first year with ducks so we are muddling through that right now. We hope to add a few chickens eventually. I'd like to do it this late Spring- but I think my poor husband would drop dead. We went from kids and a couple cats to adding 17 ducks in 1 month. :p We live in far Northern Cali (Shasta County).

Hi Zooweemama!

I have relatives in Redding and Shingletown. It looks like I have Three FBC Marans pullets and two Cockerels ready for a new home. I may have two EO Basque Pullets and three Cockerals that are ready, if Jeff does not want them. I am hatching Golden Laced Wyendottes, but they don't hatch until the first week on June. They would be ready to go outside in mid July.

If you are interested let me know. The Marans and Basque are ready to go outside, so you would not need a Brooder for them. I could get them to you when I go up to visit.

Hi Ron! I will have to get back to you on that. The idea of not having to brood them sound nice though. After brooding 20 ducks (2 batches) in the past 6 weeks we are on broody burn out. Ducks I am learning are so much more work than chickens (and I'm pooped!)! (love my duckies still though!)

My boyfriend almost dropped dead when I pushed for the chicks! Although he has the same "goal" as I do, he likes to take things slow (hence the reason we have been dating for 7 years! Hahaha.) I'm more of an impulsive person and I hate waiting! Good luck to you!

Ron - Thanks for the welcome! I'll definitely be asking lots of questions! To tell you the truth I was surprised when the chicks made it through the first night! Although I've read about raising chickens, it's pretty daunting at first!

My husband was pretty taken aback when I ordered 8 females from Metzers after we had just bought 12 straight run from a feed store. It's a good thing I did because after all those 12 (3 died) and we are left with 3 ladies and 6 drakes. 3 dudes are getting re-homed. I think if I spring 4 chickens on him right now he'd just die. I am a pull-the-bandaide off all at once kinda girl. He's more of a let it soak in the water and pull off a little bit at a time kinda guy.I appreciate him though. We keep each other balanced! Or I might be an animal hoarder or something! :p
