It is a very good idea to buy breeder chickens. Breeders usually do not breed hostile chickens, so they are often friendlier than hatchery chickens.

I second this! I met Debi when I got my Polish. She hatched them out for her friend and I bought them through her. Really nice lady and she has beautiful birds! I think another BYC member got her Marans from Debi.

She is lunching with friends and we should be able to finish up the paying part soon. She said my husband can pick them up tonight. I am glad this is the internet so you cannot hear me squeal.
I know! I didn't want her to run out and then get placed on a wait list. I also didn't want to make do with whatever I could piece together from the hatcheries. Some breeds were out until like September? Oh no! And this was local enough to save the poor things a shipping trip. This means I have to bust my hump to pretty up my ugly coop though.
Well maybe tomorrow. She hasn't sent me the bill yet or contacted me again since this afternoon. I will be sure to show proud mama pics when I get them though!

ETA here since I don't want to annoy people with 894328742398 posts of hot air. I paid mah bill and she is bringing the wee babes to work tomorrow and my husband will pick them up late later afternoon. Eeee! This was better. I need to prep their brooder anyway!
Here's some pictures of the new babies outside of their coop for the first time! They were awesome! The dogs didn't go after them, they left the dogs alone but weren't afraid, and they went back to their coop when we called them. Umm how awesome is that?!
Weird side note: My dog Gia (the brown one) loved the dried worms Johnny was feeding the chickens. What a weirdo!
1 1/2 of my new girls (with my little one Gia in the background making sure she's still Johnny's #1 girl)
My sweet roo (seriously, he is soooooo friendly!!):
One of the pullets won't let me take pictures of her and does NOT like being pet. It's kind of cute how she hides behind the rooster... but I will definitely be working on her. She won't be shy for long!
Woot! The City of Yreka (Northern-Northern California) passed Measure M, which allows up to six backyard hens! I just looked back at the thread I started when this all began, and it has been 15 months we have been working towards this. Finally! I feel like quoting Dr. MLK Jr. "Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free [to have hens] at last!"

They really are great! They are perfect pets so far. Others have said they aren't afraid of the dogs.
The shy one will be friendly soon. Lots of pullets are not to friendly until their hormones kick in at point of lay. She is also still getting used to the new place.
