One more cute one of my Marans chickies.

It didn't sound to me like she was referring to a bare back, but a bare bottom. I agree a bare back is generally too much attention from the rooster. Increasing the number of girls, using chicken aprons, getting a gentler rooster are all ways to stop that.

It sounded to me like she was talking about red, bare bottoms (think baboon butts). That is more likely a mite or nutrition problem. A small amount of feather loss can be attributed to heavy laying, late in the cycle. But a seriously bare bottom should be looked into.

With out a doubt, bare red bottoms would need to be checked into. The hens here though come from Heaven Sent Ranch in Red Bluff, the place you got your Polish from.

She would take care of mites and such, so I still think she has trimmed the feathers for fertility.

Bye,

Ron

Actually yeah bare red butt- the area under their tail. I didn't see the hens. Mil gets dozens of eggs every few weeks from them for us all and that's what she said she saw. I wasn't sure if that was something I should expect at some point...and if I could prevent it. But now I know what to look for with my hens when I get a roo and to make sure he has enough ladies I guess? 6 ladies would be enough right?

I DO know they (they is the place where we get our eating eggs) have struggled with mites a lot. So maybe that is it?

Oh I wasn't referring to Debi's at ALL! I am referring to a local place we get our eating eggs from that my mil goes to. Debi's chickens are beautiful!
