The little chick is eating alot.. just still bouncing around. how many days would you give her?? in the er pen.

I would make sure she can get away from the other chicks.

Like Capayvalleychick said, she could have had Mereks. The Vaccine does not stop them from catching Mareks, it stops some of the Cancers. Nearly all chickens get it(especially if vaccinated)--most don't show symptoms. The Cancers start at 9 months of age or so. Already this year there have been several cases of chicken cancer that was probably Mareks related. The picture of the chick with the leg straight out and not being able to walk is a symptom of Mareks infection.

Quote: The place I was getting Modesto Mills feed from special orders it, so maybe they charge more? The last bag I bought was last Fall.

Did you get the Non Soy Natural feed?

Let me know how it works out for you. We are getting a new Feed Store in Davis that will be carrying King Feed. It will be so nice to not have to drive 40 miles round trip to get good feed.

hmm interesting. I have her isolated now. Hopefully I will not have a problem with the other chicks. they all seem fine. This happened the first day I put them in the out door grow up coop with the 5x3 run attached the door is about a foot and a half off the ground with a ladder but this one liked to fly out. I just figured it landed wrong. what do you think I should do with it. still hobbling along. anything I can do for the others? I have some penedesenca's in there I do not want to loose lol

does anyone know of any Penedesenca and or empordansea breeders in Norcal??? or anyone who keeps them? tired of shipped eggs...

A friend got a Pene from a breeder in Placerville named Darcy Porter. She may not have them any more, but maybe she knows someone who does. PM me for her email if interested.

I understand how frustrating shipped eggs are. I have had some terrible hatches from shipped eggs.

I hope you find someone with Pendsenca or Crele's close to you. If you hatched nice ones, you could hatch your own this Fall.

I was turned on to a woman out in the Carolina's I believe that is raising all the Penedesenca's and White Empordansesa. I may be able to get some from her. either eggs or started trio's.
I plan on getting more Crele and Black Pene's and also the White Empordanesa. Once I get eggs off these then I can pass out to local members. I hear as well they have poor hatch rates but are way way better if not shipped.

They will probably be fine and it may have been a fall. Make sure they are getting some vitamins and probiotics. Save a chick has added a probiotic packet to their line of products. If the leg was cracked, the chick will need minerals to help heal the bone. Electrolytes and b vitamins can help them health wise.

If you got the Penedesencas eggs form a breeder, they may well have Mareks resistance. Breeders don't usually vaccinate for Mareks, so their flocks gain resistance to it.

Keep up the good work!
