So far all of this is true!

The meanest so far for me were Hatchery Partridge Rocks. Oddly, the hatchery Red Star Roosters were the nicest. The SQ Marans, so far are in the middle. Of course the EO Basque, so far is the friendliest with both other roos and people. The Hatchery SG Dorking is very friendly with people, but went after one of the Marans Cockerels this morning. He is still scared of the big girls but at least they don attack him on site any more

I have to say, Roosters add quite a bit of spice to the chicken experience.

Cocks get their temperment from their mothers, a mean stand-offish complaining hen will produce a mean and perhaps seriously aggressive son.
Nice , friendly hens will produce a nice friendly son.
Mother to son, Father to daughter.
The Father gives the daughter her egg color.

Every breed has meanies and nicies.
Some in addition to genetic aggressiveness.
But seriously, a mean cock came from a mean mother.
I have been told this over & over throughout my long life.
By most of the oldest of old poultry breeders.
And found it to be very true.

We had a Barred Rock Rooster that attacked my little brother. Most say BRs are friendly and they may be, but like you pointed out, all breeds have meanies.

I use it all the time Jules for all kinds of things including cuts & scrapes on myself. A "Chicken Lovin" in Atwater originally recommended it & I have had it on hand since then. I love it & yes it is expensive but so all purpose....LOL

i DO remember the marans chicks having more Oder then the silkies. I have no idea why it would be true, but I do notice it. But ask me no questions, ill tell you no lies....

haha Well they make up for the stanky poo in sweet temperament. My 6 year old said (in horrified voice) mom we can't eat Marans- they are too calm.

Thanks for the info! I can't wait to see the personalities of my roos! So far the only noticeable difference between any of my new breeds (male or female) is that docile way of BOs and a very flighty way about the Aconas I bought. Other than that, everyone else seems pretty much content with each other & will eat out of my hand or sit w/me whenever. I definitely have two BR roos, if the comb is any indicator: Of the three BR babies, two have bigger & more redish combs than the 3rd. Also, the color of the two supposed roos is a lot darker than the more defined blk & wht bars on the 3rd. Is that common?
