OH MY GOSH!!! Figured it out! Pics following in a minute. He had eaten some of the puppy pad. The sticky part was pasted to his tongue and then the rest was jammed in the back of his throat. I used a qtip to rub it off and then my fingers to finish 'unsticking' it. The other Marans was another one I had caught 'eating' the puppy pad the other day too- which explains why he was like that but he must have gotten his down- I checked his throat and it was clear.

On a down note. I took both cockerels outside to rejoin their flock. Well the Marans that had been in the sick house beat the crap out of my Marans that was not sick. Both of their combs are bleeding. He was pinning the the female orps to the ground and making them cry. I videod it. I didn;t know it was going to get that bad. I took a video because I thought they were just doing chicken bombs and it progressed and was actually downright mean. I removed him from the other chicks. I was told to not interfere unless blood was being drawn and there is. Blood on their combs and the Marans wouldn't stop trying to beat everyone up. But when I held him he was sweet as pie. What do I do?

Get blue kote or something similar to put on the bloody combs. Blue Kote will hide the blood as well as help the wound heal. If the chickens see blood, they will sometimes kill the injured chicken.

You could try introducing them at night when they are asleep. Do they still have light on at night? That may not work if so.

Silly chickens!

Remember my post about eating feathers? I read on here once, someone thought it would be a good idea to insulate the inside of the coop with Styrofoam. The chickens at it!

Thank you for the tip on the blood! I am floored that one day separated caused the 'sick' one to attack all the others. Like viciously. Is that normal behavior?

Oh gosh - puppy pads of all the things! I am using newspaper and pine shavings from now on. Why they thought that would be edible is beyond me but I am SO glad I do not have sick chickens and that I do not have to cull anyone.

I'm so glad to hear your babies are ok! YEAY!

For future reference tho: there is an awesome vinegar & baking soda thread on this site that explains how to make a "gas chamber" to cull chicks... I had to use it once & it worked great!
(But I hope you never have to... I buried the baby in the corner of my garden under an oak.)

It's white, so probably not the EE. My guess is one of the older layers lost the color coat for the eggs.

Blue eggs are colored in the shell. Brown eggs are white shells with a brown coat.. Green eggs are blue shells with a brown coat.

That's a nice looking egg.

. It's great that yours are still going for so long. I am encouraged.

I couldn't imagine that it was the EE... I get a blue egg from her everyday & haven't heard of a chicken laying twice a day, let alone two different colored eggs!

(Can they lay 2 x a day??)

I could understand an older brown layer loosing their "coat"... I have seen white soft shelled eggs come from my older RIR, & had to amend the situation but this is a perfect (& delicious) white egg... too cool!
SO, my next question then is should I be concerned about only getting 6-7 eggs a day from 9 layers, if I know that the two older are in fact laying? Would that be something to pay attention to- If the younger girls aren't laying daily, I mean?

I'm not patting myself on the back or anything- I know people do this stuff all the time. But I am a bonified city girl. Scooping cat litter was awful to me. Let alone a duck coop full of poop? And chicken brooders? And I cannot even count how many times I have been pooped on in the last 4 weeks. (chickens and geese have killer aim is all I am saying) I didn't freak out or squeal and today without aide I was in a chickens mouth. I am just unrecognizable! Random I know but there it is.

Twice a day! Holy smokes. My chicken book says it takes 25 hours for an egg to form and be laid. After reading about the process my stomach hurt and I was very glad not to be a chicken.
