Wow! That's amazing, I bet the hens love it!

hi everyone --

it took four *intense* days of work, especially with the unnecessary drama from one neighbor, but then thanks to the generous assistance of another (especially with hanging with wire mesh), we managed to get the new chicken coop finished -- here it is last night, when my friend was just finishing the last bits of the roof:

and i attached the last side of wire mesh skirting this morning -- and installed the two cuckoo marans pullets! they seem quite astounded, i don't think they've ever seen this much space before in their 6-week lives:

I've put them in the henhouse part initially, figuring they'll get used to it & then explore out from there when they're feeling braver (not so far today, at least that i've seen). but it feels so good to have a nice airy space for them, and to have it done for the time being! i need a rest from hammering...

and my complainy neighbor seems to have quieted down again, which is a relief.

the cool ocean air is starting to blow in here (Penngrove), so hopefully those of you inland will start cooling down soon too!
best,
laura (and dixie and ethel, which i think are going to be the names of the two pullets)

thanks! and WHAT a temperature change! we're IN the dense fog this morning, and it's 48° out -- is that an okay temp for 6-7 week old chicks to be outdoors?

and they will be getting a new roommate, probably monday, an australorp pullet that's the same age -- hoping they all will be so confused by the new home that the two marans won't gang up on the newcomer!

and megan, your coop really does look fantastic -- and those silver pencilled birds are so beautiful!! i love that patterning.

Thank you Laura! My Plymouths are from cherylcohen. She's on BYC. I was so excited to find such beautiful birds from her!

Good morning friends and happy Saturday! This cool weather is a nice break huh?!

Today we are going to introduce our new birds (Plymouth Rocks) to our "old" crew (Marraduna Basques). They've been separated by a gate for a couple of days. Yesterday, two of the Basque pullets jumped the fence and were in there with the new guys. There didn't seem to be a problem at all. Should I wait until dark to put them in the coop together? Or I can just let them all out in the pen together and see how it goes while keeping an eye on them?

I'm going to the feed store today for a few things and am planning on picking up some Corrid. I was told by a few people to put this in their water for a few days when introducing new birds (just in case the new birds have a different strand of cocci that my old birds haven't been exposed to.) Has anyone else done this before?

Cute chickens and coop! Welcome to the Cali Club! I am not from that far south (well south of north lol)- I am in Redding.

Very nice weather. Only like 100 today. Good thing because I totally forgot to freeze the darn water bottles for the chickens!

I think it's good they were getting along! I don't know much about integrating chickens. I will be doing it this week though- picking up a couple more chicks. So it'll be fun. :|

Amy, you've gotten into that chicken math thing!!!

Deb

Dang, my reply button and tool bar are history today.......................................

And the whole post is running together in a big clump!

HI! I'm back...
Missed ya'll!!

New to this post! We are in Auburn, CA. Planning a new garden/chicken coop area ourselves.

As for the original question. I have lived here all my life grew up in Chula Vista, CA which is 10 miles from the CA/MX border. So I know So. Cal. LOL I now live here in Auburn and consider the state to be divided in two sections Nor Cal and So Cal. My Nor Cal starts (if driving up from So Cal) in the Fresno Area all the way up to Oregon. It's just a random thought and line that my Hubby and I have in our heads. We drive the state about 6 times a year. North of Fresno seems like a decent location.

Here is a site that shares my opinion not that it is correct or anything. LOL

Welcome to the thread! It's the happening spot on BYC these days!
Hope everyone there is out of reach of those fires...
Stay cool!

Nope. Maybe Cooper12 isn't using enough to be a problem but it's not recommended for use with chickens.
I use the deep method with pine shavings. It's amazing how clean it stays by turning and adding a bit.
I use a DLM w/ straw for my big girls & do a full clean out 2x a year, cedar & pin e shavings w/ the babies & everything has been working fine w/ that for about the last 4 years.
There are scraps of siding under the roosts that I can scrape droppings off of & add to compost... LOVE this!
Sorry I was gone for some time. I had to go to a funeral, but now I'm back

Sorry for your loss Jersey... I am too returning from Sonoma where I stayed w/ my grandma after we lost my grandpa last Sunday... Missed you guys!!! REALLY glad to be home!

I wish I had the coop room for so many! I suddenly feel stifled by only being able to have 16 in my coop size. LOL Money is really tight for us so we can;t just build another coop because we want to. Patience is a virtue...or something right?

It has been hot and I have a tan for like the first time in yearsssss! Just need to tell my legs to catch up to my arms though.

Your turkey pics & your coop are AWESOME Amy!!! It took me three years to get the "palace" but it was well worth the wait!

thanks all for the advice -- i'll just keep being patient with them & bringing food...

unfortunately my next-door neighbor, who will have a (fairly distant) view of the (2/3 built, still empty) coop, is totally freaking out, accusing me of ruining his view and devaluing his property. very frustrating.

best,
laura
Hi Laura,
Welcome & congrats on the new coop & chickens!
I set my eggs today in my homemade cooler incubator. Hope to get a decent hatch.

Thats the coolest incubator I ever saw Ron! Good Luck w/ the hatch & I'm sorry about your roo. :(
Party this weekend...all are invited and if you haven't signed up yet, here is the link

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...ue&formkey=dHdLT3RRM2RYNVJuUjNBNlBpQmo5RHc6MQ

Wish I could be there!!!! Have fun everyone & please post pics if anyone remembers!!

We're at 99 already, supposed to get to 106. I've got a sprinkler going for the birds and the pigs. The dogs are funny, and not particularly fond of baths normally. But right now they're lining up to be rinsed off several times a day!

Been thinking about you, Jules... Hope everything is well, I officially designate a pair of "Coop Shoes" for everyone in family & am currently at the end of a Cocci breakout in the babies' house.
Had to move them into the "palace" because the brooder was too cramped & they were all getting sick. Now one has a "gleet" issue... any advice??

"The Palace"... almost done, already occupied!

On that note, hope everyone has made it thru the heat (and fires) & are getting to cool off now! Have a wonderful weekend, please let me know if there are any special gleet cures out there! Going to do an "enema" now on on of my 6 week old Columbian Wyandotte... poor thing is crying when she tries to poop.
Not thrilled to come home to this, but glad my hubby kept everyone alive in the 106 + temps while I was away.

I'm wayyy behind on reading this thread. Multi responses below...

Quote: I found the smiley on another site. It seemed to really work for the story.

For Maddy:

This one is six weeks old. Kim, are those the yellow they are supposed to have? This is a Golden Laced Wyendotte getting over the ugly feather stage. I only hatched one of these, so it probably is a little cockerel.

Maddy, you are at the right place! I am sure someone on here can get you some SQ chickens of whatever type you want and even help with showing.

Ron
