Amy: Nice Coop! Growing up we kept 20 in a set up like that. You will hear about the 4 sq feet per chicken quoted as a set rule. Then you will read that you don't need as much space if you have a big run and lots of roost space. Your sq feet should include the run since it is all open. One of the biggest points, especially where you live, is the coop and run are not really to keep the chickens in. It is to protect the chickens. How is it less cruel to leave them out where they will be brutally eaten by a predator? Often the same people that blast you for penning your chickens are the first to blast those that eat their own chickens.

Sold two Pullets yesterday, so I am now down to 35. Only 29 over my limit.....

I'll be excitedly taking 2 more off your hands end of the month- 27 then right? haha! Seriously tickled to get 2 EE!!

I spoke with Debi (HSR) and she gave me some more tips on processing. The more I read and the more I see others do it - it makes me feel more ok about the process. I helped process rabbits as a teen but i was only a part of the 'killing' part and once we got to the processing part I was a teary slobbery mess and ran away. LOL But I have to admit they did not process as humanely as I have read that more chicken owners process. So that could have something to do with my horror.

Mine will get to range some but when they are bigger and I want to be sure I am 'around' to keep a check. They are still so little! If ranging doesn't work out- I will add on a second run to the opposite side to give them even more room. Their safety is important to me.

oh, those silver pencil rocks are SO beautiful -- i'm just starting out with young birds, and don't plan to breed, so can't take on a whole trio, but if there are any chicks or pullets available, please let me know!

Amy lives in the Foot Hills by Redding. There are a lot of predators there. They will probably be fine if the Dogs protect them. In some places it is not the best thing for the chickens to leave them out. My back yard in town is fine.

On several of the Heritage sites I am subscribed to I read things like: Lost 2 more today to the fox. Got them at 2:00 pm. I know the time so will be waiting with the gun to get him today...Lost lots of chickens and several house cats....Got my best SQ Rooster yesterday.....

It makes me sad to read stuff like that. I feel the same way about thinking the rooster needs to be with the hens all the time. If they need a saddle, get the rooster out of there for part of the day

The Hens will thank you.
