We love our Buffy, too. She is indeed the sweetest, softest hen...almost a year old, now. The only problem is that she's broody for the 3rd time this summer! She did have the honor of sitting on and hatching eggs and raising a few chicks, but I just can't let her stay broody in that hot coop! We don't have roosters so I would have to buy her more eggs too -which I don't want to do. I scoop her out of the nestbox and try to reason with her to just lay her cute little pink egg and we'll all be fine.....But no, she keeps just sitting in the nestbox and getting that zombie-chicken trance! Poor thing! I finally put her in a cage with food and water to try to break her broodiness. I feel SO mean, but don't know what else to do. Good luck with your BO's. It will be interesting to see if they all are the broody types or if it varies between chickens.

Look at my poor little turkey looking Orpington...hehe. Awwww, too cute.

Looks like my old cat, Henry! You are very fortunate to have a good mouser. I've heard that their scent alone can help to keep rats and mice away from the coops!

Our mouser Odie. ;) He will sleep among the chickens and ducks and geese. But show him a mouse or lizard and he is all over that dinner!

Ok all done sharing! Sorry for clogging up the thread!

Quote: I did that on Sunday night!

The funny thing is I was out there doing a head count and putting the Roosters in the Garage. Well Corwin goes in by himself now. It is amazing. If I don't open the door soon enough he stands outside and crows. The Marans boy is very peaceful too.

They were all ok. I have read recently about more predator problems. My biggest one would be a large feral Tom cat. We had one of those several years ago. We trapped him and my wife took him to the pound. They did not believe he was a stray until it took three of them to Euthanize him. One of the Dog Catchers was bitten through his glove.

I called him Ghost and considered it a public service to get him out of the neighborhood.

ditto here! you're making me think i should perhaps get my good digital camera back from my mom, as snapping busy pullets with film (my usual approach these days) can be tricky -- but here's a polaroid taken last thursday of Lucy the Delaware, now 8 weeks old, diligently looking after the younger/smaller Daisy, an australorp who's adult head feathers don't seem to have grown in yet...

will be picking up two silver penciled plymouth rocks from Cheryl today, can't wait!
best,
laura
I'm so jealous! I wish I had more room. Cheryl's birds are gorgeous!! I haven't shot film since 2000 I think? And it was a throw away. :D Nice shot of Lucy!

Oh gosh I was horrified. So glad nothing ate any of them. Sounds like one nasty tom!

I knowwwwww that is a my HUGE fear with having a broody breed. The breed we may replace the Marans with next year- I am thinking will NOT be a broody breed. It's going to be a tall order. Not broody, good egg layer, big, dual purpose, good temper...That way we have a fairly constant supply of eggs and yet the BO could sit on their eggs when it's time to replenish stock.

Our mouser Odie. ;)

Years ago, I had a ginger cat named Odie too! I was driving home one night late, and saw a squished cat in the road, lying right on the paint line. Just as I drove by, I thought I saw it's head pop up. So I had to go back and take a look (it was a 55mph country road). I pointed my head lights out there so I could see and took my jacket to wrap it up so I could lift him (I didn't want to be bit/clawed by an injured cat. I brought him home, he had been hit right across the middle his back, there was a lot of swelling and he was paralyzed at mid body. I let him rest in a quiet dark place. Over the next two days the swelling subsided and he regained use of his back legs. I named him Odie (my favorite Garfield character) and I had him for many years. Loved that cat, he slept curled up on the bed each night.

I sent Jeff a detailed account of how I treated the star gazer

Maybe you could post it here. That was the issue I had with two turkey poults.

From my limited experience with chickens (a year of solid research and enjoyment-LOL) I would recommend the Plymouth Barred Rock. We also love our "Rocky" girl, but she is a bit more independant than the Buff Orp (still sweet though). Rocky is a BIG girl so would make a nice dual-purpose bird and she lays the biggest brown egg of our 3 laying breeds. She never acts broody and even gets a little irritated with Buffy when she is-hehe! Rocky is the top hen and as a plus...Barred Rocks are very beautiful birds and the roosters are gorgeous!

Here's Rocky during the spring. (Sorry my photo is blurry and aren't as nice as yours.
