California - Northern

Hi All,

There has been discussion about heat hardiness in chickens. Just to help us understand, Here are some numbers:

Red Bluff

The record highest temperature was 121 °F (49 °C) on August 7, 1981

Turlock

The highest recorded temperature was 111°F in 2006.

Woodlands Record high is 115 °F

The average high for Redding is 4 to 5 degrees higher than Woodland in July and August. You guys in the Redding and Red Bluff area really need chickens that can take the heat.

Some of the recent imports can't take the heat. I have read a lot of posts this summer about many of them dying in the recent heat waves back East.

Bye!

yeah Redding and Red bluff cook...

I am really interested in trying this out. Going to order it this weekend (payday). Will let you all know how it goes. Filling up 4 waterers daily is annoying. I don't know how often others do it but I like to keep the water fresh and cool- and avoid the slimy build up the water tray always gets. Not having to wash waterers, hauling little buckets in and out of the coop all the time really appeals to me!

We bought two "waterers" at the dollar store! They're plastic tubs, hold about 5 gallons, about 7 inches tall. We started out putting a brick on the bottom to weigh it down but quickly discovered we didn't need the brick. Our birds will perch on them to drink sometimes (and they're big guys) and haven't knocked it over. We put the waterers on top of two big bricks and my crazy foragers haven't managed to soil the water yet! It's easy to pick up and toss out the water and even easier to fill up with a hose. We are just starting to put apple cider vinegar in their water to keep the containers clean so hopefully we won't have that slimy build up stuff. Sometimes I love being cheap! :)

I have actually used this reasoning with my husband! My logical argument was that I can get a return on my birds and not on my shoes. His rebuttal was something to do with poop-return ON my shoes

hahaha cute!

Amy,

You said you liked a black and white bird with a pop of red..........

How about Lakenvelders? One of my very favorite breeds.

Don't mind the ratty juvenile feathers, they are still molting. And the markings will clean up even further when they get their adult set of feathers.

today's big excitement: a whole green bean vine, which had been knocked off its roots & was wilting fast -- i opened up the pods & the girls chased each other wildly to grab the beans, then ate the pods, then ate the leaves, then pecked and tugged at the vine itself. hugely popular -- wish i'd brought my camera!

and the two marans pullets, who were so crazily skittish when i first got them, both jumped up in my lap for a minute or two, looking for additional treats -- i seem to have made friends!

still new to this chicken thing and delighted by them,
laura

My hubby and I like the black and white chickens (there are a few of them!)- I haven't looked these up but briefly. Are they heat hardy? I do love the red splash! My Pinterest has one pin board called Red and I just stuff random red things I like in there. haha!

As far as temperaments go- I flat out am madly in love their my Marans for this. My cockerels let me pick them right up and are so still and calm and don't seem to mind at all. The Orps mind a lot. LOL
