What a day. We had to put my dog to sleep. He would have been 9 on my birthday. Lymphoma took him down. :( He was a sweet rottweiler. The house and routine is so off from that one pet alone- the whole family feels the 'offness'. They become our family you know?

We did get the EEs from Ron today though. That was cool! (and thanks for the eggs Ron!) Everyone is already in love with the EE. Everyone remarked how much they looked like birds not 'chickens' almost hawk like. They are sweet birds. Very skittish at first. We brought them inside for the night- no place to really put them for the quarantine part. Well they are in a huge kennel but the goslings are taking up the covered back porch right now and during the day that porch get well over 120 degrees inside- not a good place for birds during the day. (geese get walked outside into their yard during the day)

I think after 2 days in the kennel in the house- we will let them hang out with the geese during the day for the rest of the quarantine. The geese don't mind ducks or chickens.

A fun story though. Cheered me up! Tonight I let the EEs out of their kennel and run around the livingroom...fed them treats. They immediately stopped being skittish of me. Walking around me, near me...(I named them Luna and Solara) the one we call Luna (the all over brownish one) kept trying to jump on me. I was like what the...?? Then I realized she wanted to perch on my arm so I stuck it out. Hopped right on it. What??? Did you teach her that Ron? It was so cute! Then she hopped down, walked around a bit, I pet her some more and then she kept staring at my head. ???? Then I realized she now wanted to jump on my head??? We were all laughing because she would crouch real low and then finally she hopped up on my shoulder and stayed there. FUNniest thing ever! I will have my son text me the pic he got. It will be a crappy pic- bad lighting and no flash. Friendly little gals!

doesn't he think he's all that?

samson. no copper on him yet!

feeding time ;)

my daughter set herself up to watch some chicken tv. she cracks me up.
On the trip to Redding I told the EEs that they were going to a new home and that they were very lucky.

I was going to tell you that they were a bit flighty but settled down once you picked them up. I really haven't worked with them that much, but they are had raised and do like people.

The EEs have tight feathers, so they will have a leaner look. Their muffs will get bigger and their colors will change a bit too. I am so happy that I will get to see what they look like when the become hens instead of pullets
Happy birthday, Cooper!!! Sorry for the delay. I just got caught up.

Deb what does the BB mean after all the bird names? I am so happy for you- congrats!!

Ron- chick update?? How cool! Did I read that no penes had hatched?

Excuse my typos. Sent from my iPhone.
The final total is:

10 EO Marraduna Basque
6 Pita Pintas.

I am leaving the Pennes in for another couple of days. You never know.

2 of the Basque are special needs chicks. One may have strained too much trying to hatch from the wrong end. The other one is still mostly on it's back, but was trying to get to the food and water. Probably would have drowned itself. Both are in a plastic container and getting vitamin electrolyte water. Megan is going to get them today and will get to be their nurse.

They made it one day, so there is hope.

So sorry about your dog, I have four (the oldest will be 10 in October). They are my "kids". When my human son is coming over to house/pet sit when we travel, I always tell him to be nice to his brother and sisters.

ETA - I can relate to the pic of your daughter. We do the adult version. We have a couple of chairs set up in front of each of our coop/runs. Every night DH and I take an "adult beverage" and sit and watch the chickens. We always laugh that we REALLY know how to have a good time.

You can see a couple of our chairs to the side.

Impressive! Congratulations! What line of bantam buff Brahmas do you have? I am just starting with them and have 8 week old John Neff line chicks and week & 1/2 old Darlene Hobbs line chicks. I would love to see a picture of your BB bird to help me judge my birds. Actually, I'd like to see pictures of all your winning birds!!

Thanks, I was pretty happy. I spoke with the judge, he said the only thing he didn't like was his head wasn't big enough and his body wasn't filled out enough. He said the size, color and tail set were perfect. I pointed out the bird just turned 5 mos and he said "Oh, then he will be there in a few months". I got them from Dick Horstman. I will have an extra cockerel or two to get rid of when I make my final selection for my future breeding pen. This was the boy I liked best when we were prepping for show, but they are all young still. I really hadn't even planned this breed. I was buying something else and these were added to the box as fillers. Now they are one of my DH's favorites and he wants to keep raising them. This one (Roy) was actually entered as his since he likes the feather legged breeds very much.

I took my camera with me yesterday to take pictures of the birds in their cages, and I forgot

I remembered about the time we had walked back out in the heat to the exhibitor's shuttle bus. I looked at my DH and said there is no way I'm walking back, my feet hurt too much. I had been standing on a hard floor for six straight hours at that point, ouch! I'll try to take pictures before I load them when we coop-out (before they get put back in the runs with all the other birds and lose their clean shiny look

Sorry, I've been showing animals for so many decades, the acronyms just pop out naturally. BB stands for Best of Breed. BV, Best of Variety (color), BIS, Best in Show.

Poultry shows work much like dog shows, in order to get to the top, you have to win - your class, your variety, your breed, your group (such as American, Continental, Asiatic, etc - equates to Hound, Sporting, Terrier, Toy, etc), Large Fowl/Small Fowl, then you'd get BIS.

I had to take one last picture before I give these guys Megan. Most of them are in the picture. a couple were warming themselves up under the Eco Glow.

The next pictures of them will come from Megan.

Happy Olympic Sunday!

Ahahah! So it's not just us! I go out inside the coop to hang out with the chickens and just watch. I didn't realize my daughter was even going to do that- I turned around and she was just there. haha

Umm wow you raked it in at that show! That's so awesome, Deb!! Ok so pics are forthcoming on the winners right? :D

Ron- I figured they would be a little skittish at first. I mean I think any animal would be going to a new home. They are so curious and really different in temperament from the BCM and BOs right off. I think my mil quite likes how they look. She remarked several times how much they didn't look like chickens and I know she isn't overly fond of chickens. She prefers ducks. But she kept coming over to watch these girls. ;) We loooooove our animals so these girls will get handled a lot. I hope to get some pics today. I really like them. I think it all happened at the right time. My oldest and Lee and I were really upset about losing our dog, Scrappy. So the EE pullets have provided a welcome distraction- otherwise I think we'd be crying left and right.

Anyone- I hate even thinking about it but we are going to need to get another dog. We only had 1 and I feel naked without one. Is it bad that I am already thinking like that? I feel horrible evening thinking about it. With all these animals and the fact my husband sometimes goes out of town for his job for a few days at a time- I have always felt so much safer with a dog around. Not just any dog. It's hard not to feel safe with a Rott in your corner. :D

We'd like a Doberman (hubby grew up with them his whole life so he is familiar with the breed) but have you seen how much a pure breeds are? We do not have 2k to drop on a papered Dobe. And the rescue places have all older dogs. No bueno. We have little kids and loads of free ranging birds. Umm no. Need a pup. It's incredibly hard to find a Dobe that is a straight breed (not mutt mix) for under $400 as a pup. We need a pup so it can be raised with our little kids, our birds and my mil's little Pomeranian dogs. Sooooo if anyone gets a lead on Dobe pups- keep me in mind?? Please? I feel like a horrible person even talking about a new dog but it's hard to be dog less after you have had one around constantly for 9 years.

I look at that as the same as when a widower/widow jumps right back into a relationship. I think of it as a tribute. It means they were so happy being married, they like that feeling and are looking for it again right away. Think of it as a tribute to the part your dog played in your family.

No, it's not bad!

Your dog is also a worker and will be protecting you and your animals. Have you looked into Live Stock Guardian Dogs? Those are probably very expensive too. I have heard that Boarder Collies are good with animals.

I read a post about losing chickens that relates. The person was comparing City kids with 4-H and FFA kids. The City kids were upset for a long time when a chicken died. The Country kids were upset but were quickly thinking "what breed can I replace the dead one with-we have room now".

I guess practical is the word.

I am very sorry about your loss. I am glad to hear the EEs are helping. The feathers and pattern are called Duck Wing, so yes they do look a bit like ducks.
