On left her yesterday around dinner time. Unable to hold her head up, barely opened her eyes, too weak to stand. Had to force med water on her drop by drop.
On right- this morning sipping water when I offer on her own. Looking perkier.

Just now. She was standing, staring at me and looking around, makes little chicken noises when I pet her and caught her pecking at her food.
Go Hope!

Quote: I have gone through the Mareks grinder too. The If you vaccinate, around 3% or so will die from cancer anyway. If you do not vaccinate, about 5% will die from cancer. It looks like you save approx. 2% mortality. For the work and cost is it worth it?

That is for each of us to decide. Chickens will still die either way.

Nope. Here's good information about vaccinating.

Thanks you two! Stuff to ponder anyway. It is good to know that vacc'd birds won't make non-vacc'd birds sick. I think if I ever ordered any from a hatchery I would opt to have it done. It wouldn't hurt and the cost is small. But I don't know that you can vacc birds that are not little any more anyway. So you would have to start vacc'ing babies.

On a side note- does anyone know how to find out what chicken/avian diseases are prevalent in your area?

And totally UNrelated questions- leg bands. That are colored and have numbers. I would like to be able to divide by color (gender) then assign each bird a number. So I can keep track of them. Like #12 showed symptoms of cocci, treated, full recovery. #3 had bumble foot 9/03/12, treated etc. Since we don't have a ton of different breeds- its really hard to look at them and see individuals when it's a orange or black- no special markings. LOL Thanks!!

Yes, if you can't find it anywhere else, you can find it at Placerville Hardware (oldest operating hardware store west of the Mississippi). I love the foot worn paths in the wooden floor.

Why bother resisting. If you get them now, you'll be further ahead in a breeding program. You're going to get them anyway, why wait?

Do any of you vaccinate for Mareks?

Nope, only masks the problem.

Your chickens (and dogs if you have them) will be happy to eat those extra eggs. And didn't you have a neighbor you needed to suck up to?

My CL are still babies, but I'll have them eventually and I'll have extra cockerels.

Looking perkier.

Good to hear.

Its fine just join IA ( incubators anon) When we first found an abandoned duck on the side of the road that lead to chickens, I told DH his bird budget was ten bucks. how he is laughing at me now...

And speaking of cream legbars! I cant stand it anymore, I need some. Auto sexing rocks and I must have it. Anyone have babies or eggs I can buy? Id prefer to drive and get them rather then ship, and you are all closer then San Diego. Ideally sometime in early September so I might have eggs in the spring.

assuming they hatch, i'll be getting mine from Deann Disilva at Just Struttin' Farm in Novato -- already got my little Delaware pullet from her -- but she's worried about possibly a low hatching rate, as someone who got eggs from her earlier this year apparently only had about 25% hatch... will know more in a week or two!

best,
laura

Quote: Your welcome. It is good to know they can all live together since most breeders do not vaccinate for Mareks.

We have Fowl Pox in the Sacramento area. I will probably vaccinate for it in early Sept. That is supposed to be when it hits here.

Meg20000 bought little chick bands. I don't think they had numbers. You will have to change them as they grow. Cuttler supply has them along with most ag supply places.

I am so happy your little Hope is dong better!

Ron

Edited to add vaccination type. Ron

I should also add that in 3 1/2 years, I've never (knock on wood) had any chicken illness. BUT I am careful who I order eggs from (some diseases can be transmitted through the egg) and I have a closed flock. (so I don't take in any adult birds) There is some good evidence from old timer breeders that the birds that contract Mareks and live pass on stronger immunity to their offspring.

As for leg bands, I prefer these kind. I find the spiral ones too difficult to get on and off. They come in different sizes too. I think I have #12 size for adult hens, but I have #9 and #6 for growing birds too.

Does Cocci count as an illness? The viruses terrify me honestly. I will have to be picky about where I get my chicks/eggs. I'd think for comfort's sake I will stick to everyone here or recommendation from others here. LOL I am 'chicken' when it comes to unknowns.
