The problem with the ear color is that it works for most of our standard chickens so it confuses us. Penedesencas, Cream Legbars and others do not follow the rule so actually the ear color does not work Universally and is not associated with the egg color. Some people think the darkness of the red in the ear will predict the darkness of the brown too. It doesn't though.

Bye,

basically meant at least one side is open completely with three sides. maybe a few feet of side on the top of the open end to trap some of the heat. I see some people are doing it back east in wetter areas to help lessen disease. Can Get quite a bit of weather here so was wondering about building one or a few. Just wanted to test the waters to see if anyone had any

California Coops are open facing the North, since our rain comes from the south. Chickens can take the cold if they are dry or can get to a dry place at night.

Having lots of ventilation is more important for Californians with heat being a bigger problem than cold. Our coop growing up was like this and we never had a chicken freeze on us

. Your lows up there do not get below 0 degrees do they?

Just wanted to share my cream legbars with you guys.  Anyone from norcal who has been following any of the color debates regarding the legbars, I'm curious if anyone is getting males with less of the "chestnut" coloring on the back? Also curious how your females compare in regard to the coloring.  they are more similar to me but have varying size crests and slight different crest coloration, one lighter and more "greyish" than the other too.

Here is my roo. when compared to the UK pics, he has a lot of the chestnut coloring which I have to admit I prefer to the UK pictures, but again curious how those of you who have them in norcal are seeing the boys grow out in regard to color?

The girls have been fantastic.  been getting two eggs a day from the three girls.  my one who almost died has been a bit slow to resume but she did lay... and on the ground instead of the nest box!  Grrrr.  As you can see my ground is not so hospitable to eggs!  My Blue copper marans lay a beautiful egg only to have it crack on the rock she decided to lay on.. she was new to her coop so I'll give her a break for now, but man i wanted to hatch a chick from an egg so dark at the end of the season!

Anyway, gonna post some of my swedes photos as well!

Really Beautiful !!!
I will take pictures of mine soon. I have them from lines one and two...
One of my Roosters and a few of my Hens have very little Chestnut...
A few of my Roosters have shorter Legs. What do you like better?
I have been hatching chicks like crazy. I can't believe how much the color in the chicks vary..

Hi All!! I've missed everyone! I haven't read through everything but figured I need to get back on here anyways! :-)

My heart goes out to everyone who has lost chickens these past couple of weeks. I was so sad to hear the many stories. My thoughts are with you guys and I hope you guys are all doing ok.

For all of the new people: Welcome!! This thread is the best and I can't wait to interact with you guys! There is a lot of experience and knowledge here so read-up, ask questions, and enjoy! :-)

Amy Beth, Ron, Jason and Jeff - Looking forward to catching up with you guys!

We got back from visiting family yesterday. The humidity in SoCal was insane! I'm glad to be back to my "dry" heat. We checked on our big guys at the ranch and boy are their faces red! Egg time is getting near!! I also brought our baby chicks back home yesterday. They are HUGE!! We were gone only 6 days and they're completely different! It's almost impossible to get pictures because they're sooo fast but I was able to get a picture of each (kind of.. lol) Based on combs, it looks like we have a 50/50 cockerel/pullet ratio so far. Not bad! Here are some pics along with my gender guesses so far!

Basques:
EO Black (GIRL):

EO Blue (BOY - he was mad that's why his beak is open! lol):

EO Brown (GIRL - sorry it's so blurry! Amy Beth: I need your professional skills!!)

EO Green (UNKNOWN - This one is a little disabled I think. It's left eye, pictured, is a lot smaller than it's right eye. Not sure why):

EO Orange (GIRL):

EO Pink (UNKNOWN):

EO Purple (GIRL):

EO Red (BOY):

Pita Pinta's:
PP Blue (UNKNOWN):

PP Green (GIRL):

PP Orange (BOY):

P.S. I bought spiral plastic leg bands for them and hate them! They dig into their legs and they're hard to take off. I won't ever use again and wanted to let you guys know my experience just in case you are looking at leg bands!

They look so good! Sorry to hear one has a weird eye. The closer the hatch rate is to 100% the closer the ratio should be to 50/50 for pullets to cockerels.

. These two breeds hatch so well that nearly all of the ones that developed hatched! They are very hardy chickens.

Ron

Brand new chicks today. We got 15x Buff Brahma chicks and 25x Cornish meaties. They all came alive and peeping. I wasn't anticipating them coming during the hottest week of the summer but they were survivors!! Lol.

And Ron brought us a 19 week old EO rooster who is probably the friendliest chicken I have lol. I guess he's our new favorite because he let's us pet him and pick him up. He has a Brand new coop, never pooped In (Lol) all to himself for awhile until he's bombarded with Barred Rock pullets soon to move in there. But for now he is getting used to the swing of things. Hopefully the flock isnt gonna be to upset about more testosterone around.

Thanks Ron!

Your Welcome Mike!

All of the EO Basque I hatched are friendly so far. He should do very well for you.

I would seriously doubt that though the day after the big snow we had in December of 09 it hit 6 in Pleasant Valley and 9 on our hill.
My main concern though is we are moving up the hill though some. to about 3300 feet maybe 3400. same area just 1 more hill up.
Some years we can get over 60" of rain and melted snow. I may look at having much of the lower vented with some at the top too and putting heat lamps in on the coldest nights and covering the top vents when the heat lamps are on..

hmmm well I have seen pictures of these in colder areas than us so would assume it would work. My main issue is keeping critters out as if they live in California they are probably in my area.
