I really like my Roosters so far. I read a post where the person said roosters were only good for eating. Someone gave him a thumbs up for that comment.
It made me sad.
and a bit mad
Bye,
Well, I almost agree with the person's comment. Nine out of ten (roughly) roosters are only good for eating. Too many roosters and they constantly fight and are too rough on the girls. There are some breeds where the roosters live in harmony and aren't too aggressive with the girls. But you still can't have that many non-productive mouths to feed. I raised a group of seven SPPRs, I got six boys and one girl. Four boys are going for sure, I'm keeping an heir and a spare. Out of the four going, two have something I'd like to breed away from, the other two have nothing wrong with them other than being excess. You can only sell/rehome so many before the homes run dry.

Hi Deb,
I agree with the negatives with roosters. The problem was the post did not have anything positive about them.
I have shared this story before so sorry for the repeat. My Mom remembers this one, I don't. I grew up on 40 acres with Prunes on 20 acres. We raised Rabbits, pigs, Beef along with having chickens. When I was about three our cat had kittens. I said They are so cute! When do we get to eat them?
For me, one of the positives is processing the Roos. Still, like you said there are other qualities for the 1 or 2 you can keep not mentioned in the post I saw. I think mine are nice because the breeders I got them from have been working one behavior. The Marans rooster is the nicest thing ever.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my roosters. They are beautiful, their temperament is completely different than the hens, I enjoy the crow (in fact, I have some Tomaru Longcrowers coming) and I love to watch them guard over their hens. I was quite amused yesterday, my male New Hampshire was doing his best to feed treats to the Marans pullet on the other side of the fence while her roo just watched.
I have LOTS of roosters. I have LOTS of breeds and will need to keep 2ish roos for each breed. That leaves me with 30+ roos to house. But I probably still have 40 more that need to be thinned out. I just processed 12 cockerels last week.
