Well it was bound to happen--I got a notice to re home my roosters.

Ron

Ron,

Sorry to hear that. Did they also get you for over numbers or just the roos?

Well it was bound to happen--I got a notice to re home my roosters.

If anyone wants a Cream Legbar breeding trio, Dorking cockerel let me know.

If Megan does not want my EO Basque cockerel he is available too.

Lucas has first dibs on my Marans breeding trio, but if he can't get them then they are available too.

It was fun while it lasted. Actually it was longer than I thought it would be. Any of them left by Sunday will go to freezer camp.

Ron
I'm sorry Ron. :(

I'm trying so hard to be patient. Batch 1 ducks = 20 weeks. Batch 2 = 17 weeks. Batch 1 chickens: 12 weeks (almost). Batch 2 chickens: 9 weeks (almost). 4 BO started pullets I got a few weeks ago: 21 weeks

So very soon I should have 3 ducks laying and 4 chickens laying. 7 laying birds by mid-September.

Beginning of October (possibly end of September) then 8 laying ducks,

Then end-November should start seeing my first batch of chickens laying. December for my final batch of chickens.

The wait is killing me. Between buying chicks, building materials, food, medications, increased water bill...we have spent over $1000 on all this since the start. That is one very pricey egg. LOL And people only charge $3 for a dozen? rofl!

So sorry to hear that. Hope you find homes for all the boys and trios. Or maybe a good foster home and you can hatch out some of the eggs.

Dry hatch is really not the correct term. Did you catch Sunny's post yesterday? She used the dry hatch and incubates at 30%. In Woodland I cannot get 30% without adding water.

Relative humidity at the Ponderosa fire today is 12%. Heat lowers the humidity so if the room is 50% it goes down to something like 20% or so at 99.5 degrees. Incubate at a low humidity of 35 to 40%.

I was shocked today to find veining in 3 of the Trader joes fertile eggs today! Megan, if you have a trader joes in your area, go pick up a dozen and see what you get. Look for the freshest ones in the display case. Under $3.00 for a dozen so who cares if they hatch or not. It is good practice.

Well, it was not all that great for the chickens in the old days. They compensated for the lower egg production by keeping more chickens. What I remember is giving them oats and layer feed in the morning and dinner scraps at night. We did this all year round. Others cut off the food a bit during molt which is the wrong thing to do. They need more protein during the molt, not less. It helps them to recover. We did not give them free access to food, just tossed several hand fulls on the ground for them. They were forced to forage on their own.

I also read that lots of chickens did not make it through the winter because of the way they were fed and they did not care back them. Chickens were not too valuable to most people. There have always been show chickens though and they were better cared for. Ours did not die in the winters though; just in the summer and when the dog got one.

LOL Sorry guys, I don't want to reply to every post individual and clog the thread up. Thought multi-quote was more polite! LOL It's not helping my post count though! :p Would it be easier to read if I posted to each quote individually?

Great idea about the Trader Joes eggs. Sounds like a great way to test my skills (and add to my chicken math thing.) hehe

I like the they did it back then as far as cost but I can't help wanting the best for these guys! I hope one day we can have the space for free-ranging. I would love to be able to give that to our chickens.

Sorry for the pic over load. I took out my big camera and it was a nice birthday treat to go shoot something with it. My iPhone has been my constant companion. My mil is buying pizza for supper so I don't have to cook. (she eats suppers with us too) Nice treat! Marie Callender pies for dessert. YUM. How is everyone today? I am loving all the pics of the pippings and hatchlings!

My chickens got their first free ranging taste today. They are a bit skittish about it. In and out of the coop. I know they will get more adventurous. For being so freaking hefty those Orps sure can catch some air! My hen got no joke more than 3 feet of air! CRAZY!
Your chickens are getting so big! The Orps are amazingly fluffy and I think I'm in love!! I love all of your pics. Petra is gorgeous! And those two Ron gave you are just precious. BFFs! haha

So happy that you free ranged them today. How exciting for all of you :) It sounds like it went well.. Woohoo!

I'm going to take Seiji and PRAY he gets along with Chema. All good wishes are welcome! I'm so sorry Ron that this is happening. I wish there was something we could do to change it. :-(

I agree. this is a very expensive endeavor! Every time Johnny has a moment where he realizes how much we spend I have to distract him! haha

2 fave shots of my fancy shmancy foofy orps. :D

she couldn't seem to get over the fact there was no ceiling. hehe
Can't you just hear her- What the heck is that big blue thing up there?!?

Thanks for sharing all the lovely photos.
