California - Northern

speaking of freshness -- in case you haven't seen it elsewhere on the internet, you MUST watch this fabulous "remix" of Julia Child from PBS -- one of the "chorus lines" is, "freshness is essential, that makes all the difference..." -- just ridiculously charming:
UMMM That was ADORABLE! I shared it on my FB too. Thanks!

Not usually much of a sports fan, but has anyone been watching the Little League World Series? Petaluma All Stars are playing for the US Championship against Tennessee on Sat at 5pm (ESPN I think). The winner will then play for the International Little League title! Very nice to see such young people doing so well. My sister knows one of the families, and we are very excited for their son.

Northern California is well represented! Goooooo Petaluma!!!

i don't have a tv, so haven't been *watching*, but definitely following! so excited for the team & for the town!!

I am keeping the pullets. The notice was to the rooster at 10....It was kind of cute actually. Megan is taking Seiji the Basque cockerel. We should be able to work out a visit or two to get some fertile eggs.

I called yesterday and left a message for the officer. I told him the Rooster would be gone be Monday and gave him my phone number. He did not call back so as long as the rooster is gone I should be fine. I am rehoming 8 tomorrow and will have my limit of chickens after that.

Pullets are legal in Woodland and is a chicken friendly City. I may work out an arrangement later with Kim. She has offered in the past to let me grow out some cockerels. I would like to do something with Penedesenca's later.

I am also looking into Quail, since you can keep males with them. I also have quail rails for my incubator. There is a project I heard of for getting City Apartment Dwellers raising Quail. So I would be able to hatch and get really cute little eggs from them.

It is sad but I am ok!

Ron
Ron you are covered on the Penedesenca.
and the Crele's are auto sexing so you will know you are getting Pullets

Well, at least one quail has hatched from the cold incubator. I moved them all together now so they don't hatch in the turner, so Ill only see how many eggs are left not who came from what bator, but it was more then I expected! Supposed to move some chickens from that into lockdown saturday, but I'm going to wait till Sunday expecting a delayed hatch, wish me luck!

YEAH! The evacuations have been lifted for McCumber, Ron's mom town as well as lots of other communities in that area! Here's some pictures of my son-in-law and other firefighters that helped make that possible.

Thought you all would enjoy putting faces to the people who are protecting us! :thumbsup

Thank you for sharing the pictures. Can't believe they're still smiling.. They must be exhausted! He's home now right? Your daughter is a strong lady!

Ron - Glad to hear your mom's place is ok!

Gosh I need to read more about breeding. I will have 3 possible projects come Spring.

1. I want to take my BC Marans rooster and cross him with some pea combed EEs for some Olive Eggers. (but what to do with the cockerels...eat them? won't they be little?)
2. If my BC Marans prove to be hardy through the Winter- I might let my hens sit on some of their eggs for hatching. I won't be able to keep all the chicks if I do that - so I think I would sell of extras right? Despite 1 run in with heat- the rest of them have managed to get through 115 degrees. They dragged...but they lived. LOL
3. I def want to let a BO hen sit on some eggs- I would like to have a few new hens every year. Sell off the extras.

I still want to try the Basques. Maybe 2 started pullets from one of you who have them and willing to sell me started pullets in the Spring or Summer 2013.

And just for fun...shoot me now because I swore I would NOT do this...I would like to get my hands on some Chocolate ENGLISH Orpingtons. *passes out* I am in love with them.

So glad you're going to try the Basques. I'm so stoked on all of mine!

Thanks for insight chiqita. I learned a lot from reading that.

X2 Yes, thank you for sharing!

Get customers and set up a facebook page. Once your customers try your eggs they will not want the $2.00 eggs from CL. I know because there is a co worker her that buys two dozen a week from me instead of the guy she used to get them from. Mine are way better because of what I feed them. No one can come out ahead or even pay for the feed at $2.00 per dozen, so the hens are usually not well taken care of.

On the facebook page, make a big deal about all you do for them! Remember to quote the Omega 3 studies too and post pictures of your flock! Have them notify you when the want eggs. You will probably wind up with a waiting list.

Good luck!

Ron

That's a great idea Ron! And Amy Beth, I'm sure your photography skills alone would attract people to your page! :)

I LOVE Julia!!

Ahh me too! I got my first pair of pearls because I told Johnny how cool I thought she was. I really love that movie they did recently (Julia & Julia I think it was called?)

Good luck! When are you expecting the hatch to start?

Tomorrow I am picking up Ron's Basque roo, Seiji. I'm really hoping him and his brother, my roo Chema, get along. Any advice on how to introduce roosters?? I'm nervous! He's going to the ranch where I have my 6 pullets and roo in a rented coop. I was thinking of putting him in a small dog cage in the coop for a couple of days to help ease the transition. The cage is pretty small, like 2x2x2. I also have a large dog kennel but I'm using it for my 14 chicks to sleep (they're outside all day now and come in around 7:30 each night. I don't they the chicks are ready to go outside since they're only 4 weeks old tomorrow. Do you think Seiji would be ok in the small one? Is it a horribly stupid idea to just introduce them without the separation? I'm nervous because we're not introducing them in our own backyard but 15 minutes away. Both of the roosters are super friendly and gentle so far so maybe there won't be problems.. Maybe?

Any advice guys?

So great you are taking Ron's roo. Kind of like keeping him in the family!

I don't know about introducing roosters, but I know when my cockerel went to his new home the lady put him in with some young (5 wks) pullets. The pullets were terrified, but the cockerel didn't bother them at all. He was curious, but very well behaved and she kept him with them for a month at least. Cockerel was only about 14-15 weeks though, but was crowing and definitely "interested"

in the older pullets he was with before the move.

Good luck!
