well one of the most dangerous predators around my house strikes again... one of my children. This time the 3 year just couldn't wait to open the incubator to see the hatching chicks. He got two latches undone before the 5 year old apparently stopped him. However the latches never got redone and of course no one ever told papa. So, it wasn't until about 5-6 hours later during the most critical pipping and zipping time that I started to notice some chicks shrink wrapped, then I checked the humidity, then I saw the latches, then I found out what happened. so, far there are 5 chicks lost and at least 3-4 of the 12 I had to help out are likely not going to make it. granted i freaked out a bit and was moving too fast trying to help these chicks out of some serious crusties, the worse I had ever seen...humidity had dropped by almost 20% with the door partially opened and all the moisture just got cake on them. but there was no way they were making it on their own so helping was the only option. seems to mostly have impacted the silkes and the marans. after yet another long talk with my children regarding caring for chickens and considering putting a lock on the door where the incubator is.... i have calmed down and will only charge my 3 year old half price for those chicks! j/k. anyway, a sad morning but it gets a lot better when I look in the brooder and at least i checked it instead of avoiding the incubator as I usually do so I don't intervene when it's not necessary. had i done that I think i would have lost closer to 20 chicks. I'll go take a few chick pics and then I'll feel better!

Quote: yes, a lot made it and so far most of the ones that I helped out are actually doing well. we'll see. ameracaunas, brahmas, back/blue/splash copper marans, silver spangled hamburgs, faverolles, and slikies. And the best thing is that I think all but a handful of them already have buyers waiting. That makes me happy because next week I get the first fruits from my own chickens!!
that is good news that alot made it. so stressful. I just had to chance opening mine to add water and remove a extra fluffy chick while one was trying to get out. only had it open 10 seconds .. grab chick fill water mist chick trying to get out of egg with a tad bit of warm water close incubator and now hoping for the best.yes, a lot made it and so far most of the ones that I helped out are actually doing well. we'll see. ameracaunas, brahmas, back/blue/splash copper marans, silver spangled hamburgs, faverolles, and slikies. Quote: ha, yes I know that routine... if only you had two more hands!! that's where my oldest comes into play. She does all chick removal while I scurry to do whatever it is I need to open the incubator for!
