California - Northern

@ Jeff. No I didn't find any processors. Here in redding. I looked in CL for the ads I saw earlier this year but they must only work seasonally. I am just gonna do it myself. My brother and cousin said they are gonna help me but if not I might have to do just knick ot out.
Youve processed before right? This is gonna be my first time. When are you thinking about doing yours? I really want to see it done in person so I can see everything and participate. I have to do it soon. All my new meaties are ready to go into the meatie coop.

@ Ron. So that's what the eggs will look like from the chicks I just hatched? Or more blue? My cousin is his hus daughter in Reno, I told him I want him to raise these chicks for me so I can see the outcome. I really am excited about them.

They will probably be greener as the brown color covers the blue. Should be very pretty.

I am glad someone is going to raise them

What about that butcher shop off of Market street towards the river? Sorry, I can't remember the name but I could call my mom to find out.

DH tried our first processing yesterday, and got...3.. chicekns done. The only person I found charges 5 per bird. we are doing more research and I'm looking to maybe build a DIY plucker. Dh is a trooper because i'm too squemish for that part.

We going to try and meetup Tuseday? I know there is a breakfast, but not sure if some people cant make that, since I know we have a few only coming in the afternoon. I just lost the only survivor of my pricey shipped eggs, so I'm hoping someone has a few amazing BBS silkie pullets there, and maybe a showgirl roo. Rip little 50.

Sick chicken was found dead this morning. I have her in the fridge and need to go buy an envelope. Does anyone have the shipping code for Davis? I'd like to know what got her. Hopefully she isn't too far gone by the time they get her.
Amy Beth, I am so Sorry to here that..

I never get through more than 3 per session. DH does the actual dispatching and I do the rest (scald, hand pluck, etc). After 3 my back hurts too much to do more, so that works well for me (I'm old!, LOL).

Sorry you lost your chick. I currently have a batch of BBS, paint & white silkie eggs on an extended trip with the US Post Office. It's an episode of Lost, so I'm not expecting anything to hatch, if and when they do show up. This is a follow-up to the box of chicks they killed a couple of days ago by misdirecting them to SF. They spent a day there in the sort warehouse (of course no one knew where they were or I would have driven to SF) and arrived dead here the next day

There was one survivor in the box. I managed to warm a few up, one lived about 12 hours, two more for about 20 minutes. I felt like bringing their lifeless bodies back to the post office and emptying them out onto their counter so they can see what they do with their negligence.

Was that the one with the closed eye?

I am so sorry!

It is good to hear you are sending him off for a Necropsy. Watch the rest and at the first sign of sickness quarantine them. I hope it was a failure to thrive problem and none of the others will get sick.

Hi Shantih,

I am sad for your dead chick too...

Kim(CaypayValleyChick) and I processed 7 in one Morning a couple of Months ago. Honestly it was not too bad. Definitely worth saving $5.00 per bird. We even had a bit of an anatomy lesson. Myself, I have done two at a time. I think I could do three and be comfortable with that amount. If I had a lot of them, I would just process a couple in the evening after work until they were all gone.

Don't forget to let them hang out in the fridge for a couple of days before you freeze them. That allows the enzymes to soften the meat a bit.

See you on Tuesday ant the Poultry Exhibit!
