so i lost a puppy today. so sad. he looked like a premie compared to the others and just never really thrived. there were multiple ties and she delivered her puppies early so I'm thinking he was just born too early. still so hard to lose them when they are so darn cute!

oh, and I killed some of my newly hatched chicks because in the chaos of the puppies, i forgot to turn on their heating lamp that I had turned off during our 100 degree day. super fail!

i have a SFH that went broody so i'm giving her the eggs for a few days to see if she can raise the chicks better than me!

i've never worked with a broody as my incubator before. any major to dos/not to dos? or do i just give her eggs and let her do her thing?

Was it the second one in from the right in your pic? I was going to tell you to make sure it got a teat or supplement feed. I'm sorry. So sad when you lose them after you think everything is done with the stress of the delivery. Just make sure everyone's getting on the lower teats which will get milk first. Sometimes there's a bigger pup that will push the others off trying to get to the breakfast bar! After a couple days they should be able to roll on their own.

if that is the one that was noticeably smaller than the others then yes, it was him. i kept checking to see and seemed like he was getting on, but he was so much smaller than the rest. I think due to multiple ties and she having her puppies early, they would have been full term tomorrow.

Quote: ha, molly, I think we have virtually all the same breeds. whenever we do exchange eggs, it may have to be a big exchange to bring in some diversity to each of our flocks. I had chocolates but only one hatched and it died a few weeks later and I gave up. My jubilees are about 6 months old... keep hoping some eggs will come out soon. my wyandottes FINALLY started to lay. they sure took their sweet time! :-) I am getting excited to hatch some of those. I have a SFH that is broody. My very first broody hen. I decided to take advantage and try to let her hatch some stuff since this would be a first for me and my kids have been begging for me to let the chickens hatch their own eggs. I just threw everything I collected today under her, so we will see what happens!

I hope you have a good Broody.. Nothing cuter then a mother Hen with her Chicks... Love it. Sorry about all your lose today. Sucks! Yes, we do have a lot of the same breeds. I have been collecting rare breeds. I must be crazy. Not sure why I have so many breed... I must be crazy! I will trade with you any time. Not all are laying yet. Not sure what I'm going to do when they are all lay... Yikes!

I hope you both get your chicks delivered safe and sound.

thanks -- had a 50% result here, the splash isbar and one cream legbar have arrived okay and seem to be eating and drinking, but the other two ( a black isbar & another CL) are dead. perhaps sending chicks such a long distance (from Georgia) just isn't a good idea.

and PapaBrooder, so sorry to read about your chicks and pup!

Sorry to here that :( i have not shipped chicks yet.. I have lots of customer that ask me to.... I'm to scared. The only chicken I have received in the mail, I got from green fire farm. I was a nervous wreck. All my other rare chicken, I have hatched from eggs..

the 5-6 week old sussex pullets i got a month or so ago came through fine -- but a group of 5 baby chicks that was sent at the same time all turned up dead (granted, the weather was much hotter then, plus A/C was probably blasting in some of the postal facilities, so they could have gotten either too hot or too cold). today's batch was a mix of 2, 3, and 4 week olds -- the ones that died were the 4-week & one of the 2-weeks. so i'm not sure there's a pattern here... only that cross-country travel is difficult!

Congratulations on the puppies!

Sorry about the chicks. I love the EcoGlows because you can leave them on when it is hot. You do have to check to make sure it is still on but so far mine have been great. I have had to use the light when I had more than three hatches at a time.

Quote: Shipping seems to be iffy when it is hot or cold. It was over 95 here today and in Redding it was over 100. Depending where the shipment went, they could have been both hot and cold.

Same as always, give them baby vitamins(a drop a couple of times a day) without iron or give them the Rooster booster for chicks. The ones you have that are alive are not safe from dying for 2 or 3 more days.
