That would be awesome because we have 11 girls and only 5 (or 6 and they are taking turns) ducks appear to be laying currently. That means 5 or 6 are holding out. LOL

Amy Beth I read your post and you made me feel like I had to also be super responsible and not risk further infections. I saved 1 of the chicks to send into UC Davis to FINALLY know what it was.
I do feel bad though. They were some of my favorite chicks. And I really wanted to grow out the silver laced brahmas.

But hopefully I win this auction for the Breese!

I'm sorry you had to cull. By far that is THE hardest part of all of this for me. I'm a 'do what's necessary' kind of person but I LOVE love love animals. Love. I panic when my kids bring me outdoor lizards that are wounded and I nurse them back to health. Mice? Yes I have saved them too. It's a horrible mind war with all of this for me.

I am SO excited about the bid. Keep us in the know!

So I'm hoping this auction stays around $300. But 7 days left, 14 bidders. It might get a little too much for me at the moment. It could get pretty steep.
I also bid on some chocolate orpington LF project eggs which might be cool!
And I bid on some a pair of jubilee Orps!


I'm trying to get ready for chick season this coming spring. Chocolate Orps are gonna be a BIG hit in 2013

Well, at least I've got some interesting news. We've decided that we'll get more than just the 36 chickens I was promised if we can afford it. I admit I'm getting my chicks from a hatchery, not from a feed store and I can't afford to buy from the serious breeders ->*glances at above price* So I know I'm going to lose a few (though I certainly HOPE I don't lose ANY!) I had run of good luck this year with my first dozen chicks of which none died of illness, although a dog got one and another died of a broken jaw, and I'm crossing my fingers and hoping that luck carries over into next year. That said part of me looks at all the strange names and wonders if I should at least TRY to get a few of them at some point. I really like the looks of the Jubilee Orps, but what would you serious people suggest for a beginner?

As a beginner myself- I like Orps. For me they have been darn hardy. I have none laying yet so for laying I cannot speak on any chicken. There is absolutely no shame in having hatchery stock at all. They are cost effective, good feed conversion and great layers.

I did choose to buy quality stock from breeders. My goals are long term rather than short term. I ideally would like to have a lower rotation (hatchery hens are usually spent within 2-3 years and their egg laying generally starts to noticeably decline, those hens are culled to make room for fresh layers) of my hens and have them last a few years - especially my broodies. I do plan on having some hatchery stock this Spring for egg laying purposes. I am thinking leghorns of some type at this point. One day if I decide to sell my surplus eggs for hatching or excess chicks from my broodies that I don't need- I might fetch a decent price because I have good healthy stock. That could help pay for feed sometimes.

If you are in it for just the eggs- I think sticking with hatchery chickens are fine, personally.

Yea the Breese is a VERY VERY special French meat chicken. They say it sells up to $125 for a 7lb capon at a French butcher are Christmas time!
I think I'm going to try and collect rare exquisite meat birds and breed them and have them available in one place for people to have some diversity when ordering meat chicks.

The Chocolate Orps are going for about $500 a chick I believe and $1500 for a 6 week old pair. The line I'm getting is Ramsley line. Which is the beat line of Orps in the UK. Or arguably the world. And the LF Chocolate orp is Super rare! IRS a brand new color. But by the time I get them AMD ha e chicks they more than likely will be a lot more affordable.
Im stoked about the jubilee orpingtons too! I've been having a hard time getting anyone to come up off of them. So finally I might have chance!

Lol I definitely understand where your coming from.

For me its different. I am thinking about things from a business aspect as well not just from a hobbyists aspect.
My plan soon is to start a few different business with chickens, and quality is the only thing that matters.

I have hatchery chickens though. A flock of barred rocks and my Cornish x I buy from cackle.
Qndlso I'm just fascinated by rare things period. Having something exclusive. That not everyone has or CAN get. I've been like that since I was a kid. From the clothes and shoes I wear. Cars I like. Cigars I smoke.

Just being unique. That's what I like.
