Just to give you a visual of a blue Langshan, here is a pic of my hen who is no longer with me.

I have a couple of pullets but I need to get some updated pics of them.

Very pretty! It does look similar to her. Such a striking color.

I dug out the "good" camera and took clearer shots. Excuse the mess in the barn. I just haven't picked up those odds and ends yet. :)

Well shoot, another one of my chicks died. I knew it wouldn't make it through the night. It was the small one and I knew it wouldn't make it, just waiting for it to die so I could send it off to UC Davis. I never treated them with the antibiotics. Within a few days of deciding if I should or not the little one lost ground while the other three grew so I figured this would be the situation. The remaining three are growing normally and really beautiful. Looks like one cockerel (and gorgeous) and two pullets. If the results are the black mold then I'm going to move these three up to the grow out pen and let them be chickens, they made it through.

Amy Beth, I think you talked about how unfriendly Marans are. I've been a little frustrated with the fact that these little guys aren't very friendly. After keeping them in the garage, they've had lots of interaction with us but they still run like maniacs when they see anyone coming and squeal when we pick them up. Even my broody chicks come up to me and don't run off when they see me. They are beautiful but I wish they were a little less freaked out.
I'm so sorry you lost another one. :(

That's so odd! My Marans are SO darn friendly. No pecking or freaking out much when you catch them. The older mine get the more stand offish they become but we can still pick them up and hold them and they are extremely calm. I'm sorry yous are not. :(

Hope everyone is having a good week so far! Nothing much to report here at this time (isn't that GOOD news though? LOL). You all are giving me some serious chicken envy though. Want some more chickens. haha!

I just sold a few of my olive eggers and easter eggers. I am rehoming my icelandic's this next week to a buddy who will give me hatching eggs once I move and have more room.
So this will leave me with
1 Blue Ameraucana hen ( she is feisty )
3 white empordanesa
4 crele penedesenca
2 partridge penedesenca ( hen is partridge x wheaten)
I will be getting 2 more crele hens next week

( Deann , Deb) that means I will be making my Placerville - Sebastopol trek then if you want me to transport eggs
This is the lowest amount of Chickens I have had in awhile. At least the feed bill will be lower.
I am hoping to hatch 1 more time before it gets really cold though it is Chilly in the mornings already.

Theres been a lot going on here lately. Just finished up all the reading! Amy Beth betaled congratulations on processing your first chicken!! I did my first one last month on the 12th. I let him sit for 7 days vacuum sealed in the fridge. He was soo tender! I have a whole batch of meat birds that I have to process. They are going on 10 weeks. And I've fed them %100 organic chick starter/grower the whole time. And I fermented their feed with organic ACV. I have 16 I think? It's coming up on that time again soon! Papabrooder congratulations on your first rhodebar and jubilee chicks! Hopefully many more to come! BigDaddysMom I'm sorry you lost ANOTHER chick! I had some clear and unpresent casualties back a little while ago too. I know its just apart of the game. Hopefully its nothing serious. Ron your chickens always look so perfect! The feathers just GLEAM! Lol I need your feed mix man! PGRanch Welcome to the thread! (Again Lol) you definitely have some Brahmas. The black boy with the white neck looks like a dark Brahma. Maybe a silver laced but probably not if I'm right. I think the brown boy is a partridge Brahma. Blue langshan for sure (I think). Blue Cochin. Buff orpington and a buff orpington/Brahma cross. Those are just my guesses. I think that' was all the major stuff. If I missed anything important please let me know ;). Ok now for my news!!!!!!!!!! MAJOR POST-SUMMER CLEAN UP! This whole week and last weekend has been the biggest cleaning session of my life! Lol The entire property was cleaned! Yards, pastures, House, Well house, Garage, coops, brooders.... Everything!!!! I figured now was the time to do it. A friend of mine flew out here from Columbus, Ohio. So I have 2 extra sets of hands thank god! I've still been doing everythingpetty much by myself. She just gets to do the "Enjoyable" things. While I busted my a*s (literally, a few times) shaping up this place. But it is finally DONE! I can sit down now and honestly not think of anything else to clean. I'm glad that's done now so all I have to worry about now is making sure my chickens stay healthy and think about future spring projects. I'll save that for another post though. I did get a very hilarious couple of pictures tonight. One of my Rhode Island Red Layer hens bravely roosted inside of my Barbeque! Lmbo!! I don't know if this was a joke on me or her but I made her mad laughing soo hard! Maybe she's protesting the operation of grills and BBQ sauce on a chicken farm Lol

By "brown boy" are you referring to the red and green one?
