California - Northern

I hear you!! I just planted a bunch of fruit trees and almost have of them have had all the leaves eaten off as high as the deer could reach. AARgh! I don't know what to do to keep them away. I thought about moving our dogs kennel to the middle of the trees to see if that would help! I would love any tips that don't involve building an 8 foot deer fence. :)
Can't help you - we did the 7 ft fence for our orchard. On the plus side, it's also the run for my welsummer flock. It's about 50 ft X 80 ft.

When they come into my yard, how about if I send them to your house? And eat all your plants? I always go to the nursery and ask about plants for deer. They say, you want something deer resistant? And I say no, I want something that will make them choke to death and die!

I agree. They aren't supposed to eat lilac bushes. Tell that to my poor lilac bush. Then they rub their fuzz off their antlers on my fig tree and break the branches.
The wildlife (deer, wild pigs, coyotes, etc) seem really desperate for food this fall. There's a young buck who has been eating my roses right on our porch outside our sliding glass doors. He even comes almost every night even when all the lights are on, windows/doors open and the TV blaring. If you chase him off, he comes right back:( There's a momma doe, yearling, and fawn down the street too and they look really skinny. The wild pigs are so desperate that they plowed through the neighbors electric fence to get to their lawn! I wouldn't mind the deer if they ate my lawn instead of the fruit trees and roses...grrrrr. Our dogs are the only reason why I still have fruit trees, a lawn and chickens. What good girls they are and we're lucky to have them. But the dogs have to sleep sometime and that is when the deer sneak in on the opposite side of the house. Hopefully the wild pigs don't sneak in... they can cause A LOT of damage in minutes.

On a side note I saw a roadrunner in our yard! I've haven't seen one in the North state in all the years I've lived here. I saw them in AZ, but not here. Really neat bird! I looked them up on the internet and saw that they would eat small birds and ran out to check on some chicks I was letting free range. Luckily the chicks were all fine, but it seems everything likes to eat chickens, LOL.

edited to add: There's also almost NO acorns on the oaks around our property this year. The deer and pigs will really miss that food supply and have even a harder time finding food. No acorns + very little grass= less squirrels and gophers =no food for the coyotes= very hungry coyotes going after livestock.

No way - A Roadrunner? I've seen them in AZ, but never here.
On a related note, I read an article yesterday that said contrary to expectations, Mountain Lions released into Nevada were migrating back into CA Via the Sierra Nevadas. They are not hunted in CA and there is more food and water in CA, so they are moving in.

Another predator to worry about...

There have been mountain lions in CA for a VERY long time. They range through 98% of California, including the desert.
re: mountain lions -- they've been here in CA longer than people have, and the more we build our homes close to wild areas where they live, the more trouble we'll potentially have from them. there were several livestock kills on my road on Sonoma Mtn this summer, most of which were attributed to feral dogs (!), but two were likely mountain lion, due to the way the animals were killed & then cached -- but we'll just have to secure our animals better and accept any loses we might incur, because we're living in THEIR neighborhood, not the other way around.

Yup! We have several sightings here every year. Had one on our property once (saw it's tracks in the snow). A couple of years ago our neighbor's dog had one cornered.
About Hope: I noticed for about three days she had a very large crop that hung really low. I took her to Cheryl's and Cheryl put a tub down her throat and into her crop. She then filled the crop up with water and mineral oil. This made Hope throw up a bunch of times and we were able to empty the crop completely. I brought her home and noticed her crop was full again and huge the next day so I did the following: Day 1) No food, Day 2) yogurt only, Day 3) Eggs and olive oil only, Day 4) Yogurt, olive oil and mashed medicated food, Day 5) Same as day 4. She's been back in the coop for a couple of days and is back to normal now!!
Glad she's doing better!

The point is not that there are no Mountain Lions here but that there are going to be a lot more. They will also be moving into areas that they are not in now.

I'm with you on the feed Mike.. Maybe we need to start exploring other options. there is honestly enough people up here that would  probably be willing to go in on it.  i've got easily 30 bags  laying around empty plus trash cans etc. anyway, i think we need to explore this cause I'm so frustrated with the feed from TSC.  I really don't think it does enough for the chickens. when I am able to let them out it, they get a ton from the land and as winter approaches most of my chickens will free range all winter except for the breeds that are just starting to lay who I need to hatch eggs from but that's maybe 3-4 of my pens.  Just this week I've been letting 2-3 pens out at a time and I am already noticing how much they are gleaning from the land!  They just look happier! ha

This cascade feed thing Ron is talking about aounds lile the best thing smokin right now. i just hope someone can be able to foot the bill who has more chickens than i do. You probably need 4x the amount I do so if you need mebto buy some from you or put money in, we can do that too.

I would love to be able to afford Cascade Feed. I could have bulk delivered here and be a distributor if enough people are interested. I have a son in Chico and a friend in Redding, so I sometimes head up that way. Another son is in Fair Oaks, so I go that way sometimes, also.

If you end up getting some, I will buy feed from you. Just to let ya know. ;)

Information on Cascade Feed from MaGill:

Sorry for the long delay as we our slammed...For us to send a whole load down is the only price break, (22 ton).  The price would be 890 ton for 50# bags and .41cents per lbs for bulk bags.   Thanks and if we can help please let us know.  Larry

The bulk bag cost would be $20.5 or 50 pounds. Really good for Organic Non Soy Non corn. I might be worth seeing if you could get them to give you a break on a smaller amount.

Ron

I'm going to email them.

Is that email address a Gmail address? Just says @mail.com at the end

I contacted a local breeder about trading my 3 sicilian buttercups for some Cukoo maran pullets.  He said yes!  It would be cool to have some really dark brown eggs.

That's soo cool! I want some marans too. I was thinking about blue wheaten or blue birchen. But I do need some chocolate eggs.

I'm so glad you guys are liking the Pita Pintas. They are STUNNING. The cockerels' red combs and wattles have an amazing contrast against their black and white feathers. Also, when the sun hits their black feathers you can see blue, purple and green on them. I love watching them walk around and "change" colors!
Thanks Ron! I had no idea they were redder than others' birds. I only thought Jessie was (he's so beautiful.) I have a couple of really red girls too. It's so fun watching them grow and change!
Thank you guys for the comments! I miss you all and this great community!

They definitely are a special breed. I'd definitely live to raise some from your girls when they start laying.

Wow! Hope is a real trooper! Glad she is feeling better and back in the coop now!

Isn't it scary! We cut into our chicken and emptied the crop that way. The first 24 hours he only had water. Then we put him on a scrambled egg and yogurt diet for 3 days. Then wet mash for a couple days then straight feed and he is still going. I tell ya the crop thing panicked me! It is SO funny how many people freaked out on me for feeding him scrambled egg. You would feed egg to a chicken...isn't that like eating your own baby? haha I tell ya it's the wonder food when a chicken needs high quality protein that is easy for them to digest. I am so glad Hope is doing ok!

Don't have any POL pullets for sale, but after more of my show birds start to lay, I'll be moving out my hatchery egg flock. They'll be two in the spring, so they'll still have at least another year of laying in them. I do live right outside of P'ville in Shingle Springs.

oh! I know chicken people will appreciate this :)

The contractor came out yesterday and I let him and his worker in to measure a window. After they left, I reached up to redo my hair tie and found a 6 inch feather in my hair! I was so embarrassed! I must have looked like a complete dork!

Tell em it was on purpose, you were being festive!

All my scraps (well anything a chicken can eat) go to my birds. Of course I'm splitting the scraps from two people between 200+ birds

I also have about 30 finches in the house. Each night I dump their seed cups and refill them. All that goes to the chickens. It's a mix of about half good quality finch mix (mix of seeds, dehydrated vege/fruit, vitamin pellets) and half hulls. The chickens clean that all up every day.

Just a cute photo of my 6 month olds free ranging with 2 of my dogs digging up ground squirrels :)

That white bird stands out so much, it looks photoshopped!

anyone dealt with an egg bound hen before? I think I may have an egg bound silkie but have not had the nerve to "explore". any recommendations. i noticed her not moving around well last night and then this morning she was in the same spot she was in last night which is not normal. she'll eat and drink but walks very slow and kind of waddles. i have her in a warm bath right now but also have to leave in 15 minutes so any quick ideas would be helpful! :)

Warm bath and a little oil inserted into the vent would be my go to treatment. That's what you do for pet birds.

Just think Chicken farmers in California in the 1800's had to contend with Grizzlies and up to the mid 1800's there where Jaguars as well in parts of the state

I thought i saw somewhere yesterday or maybe today. something about cheyenne pepper. what is it used for for your chickens? and how do you feed it to them?

Try to wrap my head around this... Is 40 -50 pound bags in a ton? I use so much feed. It's killing me..
