California - Northern

This is one of my best fbcm roosters. How is his comb? Is it ok? I don't have any perfect Roos from my 2 batches but he is one of my best.

His Comb looks good! It may have too many points, but that is not a big deal. Walt Lucas, Poultry Judge and APA guy posted last week about a Champion Heritage RIR that has too many points and he said The RIR is so good that no one cares.....

Can you really give a chicken a bath? If so, how would you? Warm water...some kind of soap? I literally would like to give him one. He looks so gross!

I gave mine a bath and they loved it. One tub full of warm water, use a gentle soap (I use Dr. Bronners), work the soap gently through the feathers. You have to bob them up & down a bit in the water to get them wet. They relax and sometimes go to sleep so watch to keep their head above the water. Second tub full of warm rinse water with a little vinegar. Bob them in this some more to rinse off all the soap. Third tub with warm water to make sure that they are rinsed clean of all the soap. Wrap in a towel when finished and use a cloth, Q-tips etc. to clean the head, feet etc. Put them in a crate in a warm place to dry.

I love your rooster's tiger stripe eye.

Ok I use natural soap here - so I bet that would be perfect. I will wait tomorrow so he can warm up a little easier. Might freak him out if I do it tonight. hehe

Thanks! I have always loved his brown eyes. My other FBCM rooster is huge and handsome but has all black eyes. So this guy's brown ones really stuck out.

I have seen all sorts of other breeds on Craigslist though. Where are you? Maybe try your local Craigslist. I know people say Northern California and assume any of it would be local but I am in Redding and that is really up North and some people the Bay Area is local. Metzers is So Cal BUT depending on where you are located that could be relatively close to you. We got most of our ducks and both of our geese from Metzers.

I am in Middletown. I don't EVER go to the bay area (stockton/fairfield is about as far as I go). I try to avoid places of mass population. I did check out craigslist but haven't seen any mallards.

I'll check out Metzers. :)

I'm sorry! I know locally to me (Redding) I see people selling Muscovies quite a bit. But never see any ads for mallards. Metzers is a good place for standard non fancy waterfowl. If you want show quality though- I really don't know.

No need to be sorry! I would be more willing to travel north for anything than go south.

I'm not looking for show quality. The man is an avid duck hunter and I thought it would be funny to get some so he could practice his calling skills
