I'm teaching this all to my boys too. They may or may not use it- but it's a lost art anymore and I like for both my boys and girls to know how to fully take care of themselves (frugally and healthfully). After I master canning. I will move on to dehydrating.I've always loved what I call the "old lady sports" at the Fair, baking, canning, tatting, etc. I think I've finally convinced my son to let me teach him to can (I didn't have a daughter).Although he does enjoy baking.![]()

And these are not skills my mama taught me. She worked full time and didn't have time to teach me anything. When I got married - we lived out of Hamburger Helper boxes for years. Now I can actually 'cook'.I'm teaching this all to my boys too. My mom did some canning but I remember my Grandmother doing so much more. I have Grandmas bread & butter pickles and pickled beet recipes that I sell at our growers market. But what I really what is a tiny crabapple tree. She would put up the tiny little jems and we would have them on holidays. The smallest fruit size I've seen in any catalog is a 2 inch fruit, hers where about half that size.
We have alot of boys that do 4-H cooking and do very well, took awards at state fair even.
I'm so glad she's OK. On Saturday, two teenage kids, one the daughter of a longtime friend, were killed in a car accident. The driver tried to avoid hitting a deer. It's hit the community really hard. My heart sunk when I read she was in an accident, relieved to read she's OK.My daughter gave me a big Kiss this morning and was off to school.... Thirty minutes later I get a call from a police officer. My daughter had neen in a car accident... Never been so scared in my life.. I jump in my car " in my PJ's" raced to the accident .... She was a little banged up. The car is a mess...but she is fine THANK GOD! Her little face was so scared...just a reminder of how fast our world could change... I love my kids more then ANYTHING ! Grateful she will be fine...
I have her recipe, just can't find the tiny fruits that grew in her yard in Newell, CA. It's kinda like trying to find THICK rinds on watermelons for rind pickles. Most everything now has thin rinds.
