Buffy totally adopted the 3 babies!

The pictures say it all.

The "big girl's" coop.

Buffy's area under the poop boards has chicken wire to keep the other girls away from her nest.

"This is how we peck and scratch for food"
"This is how we dust bathe!"
Yeah for Buffy!!!! You must be so relieved! They are adorable!

Hey good morning everyone.

Please do me a favor and keep my family in your daily prayers. They are on the east coast braving the hurricane. I have family in New York City and Ohio.

My grandmother on my fathers side lives a tenement building in Harlem. They evacuated the buildings a few days ago but she stayed. My uncle's are there with her.

I just hope their electricity stays on.

Boy I'm trying to get caught up on this thread, got behind a bit and wow lots of posts.

Molly- So,glad your daughter is OK.

BigDaddysMom- WHAT a cute face!!!! Such as sweet puppy.

Cali Chick- glad your broody took the chicks. Looks like you have a good momma hen there.

Debi- My mom didn't cook much...she had a few recipes but that's all. Might of been because all we had for most of my child hood years to cook with was a hot plate, microwave oven and crock pot. Microwave cupcakes anyone??? We didn't do a lot of baking LOL. But, I've been trying hard to learn how to bake breads and home cook everything. I used to can/dry fruit when our neighbor's had a fruit farm. They gave me all the fruit I could eat and then some. It has just been too expensive to buy fruit for canning so I haven't done it in years.

Happy Chooks- I can't wait to start canning again once my fruit trees start producing. I have nearly 40 trees (most in the ground, some potted and some ordered).

Trisha

Some of what I have...
8 Apples (planning on ordering scion wood to graft even more varieties on to the 8) Want a crab apple too.
5 peaches (+one more ordered)
3 nectarines
4 pluots
4 plums
1 persimmon
1 Asian pear (grafted with 4 varieties)
3 apricots (+2 more ordered)
1 cherryxplum hybrid (ordered)
1 cherry (+2 more ordered)
2 medlar trees (ordered)- makes wonderful preserves.
10+ black berry vines thorn-less
3 raspberry vines
2 grapes (plus 1 ordered)
5 pineapple guavas
3 pomegranates
12+ blueberry plants in pots (going to make a raised bed for them hopefully this year)
lemon, pink orange and mandarin (in pots...gets a bit cold here for them)
Plus some "exotic" berry bushes I ordered but can't remember their names of the top of my head LOL.

This weekend my husband was nice enough to deliver Happy Chooks some cockerels on his way to pick up some lumber. He had some cedar milled in extra large pieces for a covered "pergola" near our pool that he wants to build. My back is so sore after helping unload it from the trailer....There are two huge beams and a bunch of large rafters and posts. It barely fits in our garage.

for your family's safety. My mom grew up on Long Island and has friends and distant family in the area.

I've never heard of Medlar - what is it? I didn't bother with cherries, with the robin's around here, I wouldn't get any anyway. I have most of what you have:
apples, nectarines, peaches, plums, orange (though it's hard to grow up here), pluots, fig, raspberries, blueberries, grapes and my blackberries grow naturally here.

I want to add an apricot, maybe a pear, pomegranate and another fig tree. The pomegranate and the fig don't need fencing from the deer, so they can go anywhere. The others have to be fenced around here though.

I still have canning to do - strawberries, blackberries and raspberries in the freezer still. And I'm going to go to my grandmothers and get a ton of Granny smith apples from her 30+ year old tree. She is a widow and doesn't use very many and nobody else in my family goes to pick any - so I'll take them!

Yes, he was very sweet to deliver those babies to me. They have adjusted well in quarantine - in a couple weeks I'll move them in with the flock. I can't wait for them to grow up!

The wood looks great! You'll have to post the finished pergola.

Quote: I just learned about medlars this year. Apparently they've been grown in Europe for thousands of years. I was told they grow well in California too. I choose a cultivator from France and one from Spain. Figured those were the closest climates to California.

Monster Clucker: I pray your family is ok in New York. I cannot imagine something like that storm.

Happy Chooks and tls_ranch: I plant trees wherever I live. At the current place I have planted: 2 Mandarin Orange trees(needs cross pollination), a Plum tree and an Apricot tree. I have also planted several shade trees, roses and such. I need to move the Apricot tree. Someone built a shed too close to it!

. I will probably plant a Peach tree or a Pear tree this winter.

I am a fifth generation Californian on my Moms side, so they all canned fruit and made jelly. It seemed like June through Sept. the pots were always boiling. My Mom grew up on a chicken farm too. I canned growing up but stopped when I got married. My Step-Mother in Law visited one time and told me I was silly for not canning and making my own Jelly. I haven't stopped yet...

I too want to get into pressure canning. I should get more into pickling too.

Zooweemama: This is a good time to can those pears. It is the end of canning season so canning supplies are going on sale. OSH was selling jars a couple of weeks ago. This is a great time to get them canned for Christmas presents too.

The funniest Christmas present was when I made Jalapeno jelly for my sister. The whole family were wearing goggles and masks by the time I finished. It was worth it though...
