California - Northern

Thank you for the referrals. When we move -and I can "legally" have a rooster- I want a flock of girls that will lay eggs AND have pure-breed babies instead of mutts. Hmmmmmm, maybe I'll get some of Rons Heritage RIR's???? I met a lady at the state fair who was showing her Heritage RIR. He was beautiful and gentle. And, RIR's aren't known for going broody like my BO. I have time to think about it.
thedragonlady is a source for SOP BOs or can help you find another breeder. Look for her here on BYC.

You might also check with Karen Thomas / sewandgrow here on BYC. She has some stunning BOs and she is in Turlock, not overly far from you.

OMG, I love your Hatitage RIRs... That is something I would like to add to my little chicken Farm..

very exciting Ron.

The weather here is STUNning. I cleaned duck and chicken coops. Fresh nest boxes, bedding on floor, clean poop board under the roost bar in chicken coop. Fresh. ahhh
I was thinking the same thing since the end of the week. Thursday afternoon was one of those glowing days of Fall that makes California such a nice place to live. Then Friday Morning I drove to work with some Tulle fog in the fields.

It was Gorgeous. I sent the day making Doberge https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/693812/the-old-folks-home/1360#post_9885939Cake and Carnitas. This afternoon I have been repairing the chicken damage in my back yard. Will risk some Fescue seeds in the hope that they will germinate before it gets too cold.
Welcome Redchicken, congrats on all the egg swapping and fall cleaning going on with everyone!

I've been working like crazy to get my store ready for Christmas and train two new girls to manage the store and wine bar during the towns Christmas preview.....while I'm in Hawaii!!!!

I had to fire one employee and its harder then you think to get good help, then my other employee had an old injury flare up and she's out for the season, just as I'm finally getting my first vacation in 2 years!

So let the cards fall where they will and I pray customers are patient and understanding....

On a good note, here's the two remaining Blue Marans. They actually came into the Polish pen where I was sitting and pooped and pecked all around me. Maybe they'll be friendly after all.

You deserve a vacation after two years! I hope the new help works out for you.

Quote: When do you move? The Roosters were very nice. I sold them for next to nothing at the Small Animal Exchange in Sept. They probably went to the Auction in Roseville.

Back to work!

Really, the weather is perfect. Skipped yard work, got family to go hiking. Thanks for the hellos, BigDaddysMom, Zooweemama, HappyChooks, Ronott1, MissMolly, and Cooper12. It's crazy beautiful out there! Don't like the time change, though.

LOL. Nope - I'm not the Project Manager. I'm da Moderator.

I was just quoted in the first post for my entry in last year's molt contest. I'm the shameful one who likes to take pictures of my birds while they are molting.

goodness, lots going on out there in this amazing weather! it was an unexpected day for me in ChickenLand -- posted some photos of what i thought were my two Cream Legbars to the CL thread here on BYC this morning:

speedy (in foreground) and amelia

amelia

but someone on the list thought amelia didn't look like a CL -- so I pm'd Deann, who i got her from as a day-old chick, and she agreed -- much more likely to be one of her CL/penedensca crosses (trying to make an olive-egger!) who got mixed up in the hatch. i suppose that explains why these two look fairly different!

but Deann was INCREDIBLY kind and generous and offered a CL pullet of the same age as a replacement -- plus I bought an extra basque pullet from her, so the new CL wouldn't be lonely as she integrates into my flock. so funny, that i just sold Baby the basque cockerel on friday, along with the isbar cockerel, and now two days later they're unexpectedly replaced by two pullets! SO wonderfully delighted -- here are the new girls:

the new CL, amazingly friendly and sweet -- I'm thinking of calling her Lucy Two, in honor of my sweet delaware pullet who passed away earlier this summer

and the new basque pullet, on the left, sizing up her likely sibling/cousin eleanor (who came from the same breeder) -- I think she'll be called maggie

all of the younger flock together -- two basques, two CLs, and the CL/penedensca mix

the big girls are not entirely welcoming to the newcomers, so i've put them in a separate enclosure for a few days at least...

and finally, the big girls enjoying the warm weather by roaming far and wide!

thank you Deann!! the new birds are so lovely!!!

Olive Egger! Olive Egger. The Penedesenca x CL should lay the most amazing olive colored eggs.

You are so lucky!

The replacements look very nice. I like the Mill Fleur pattern on the Basque:

This is Leela:

She has the black spots on her back.

use a good mulch over the grass seed not too thick and keep the falling leaves off the new areas.
the hardest part of starting this late is the frost. before the roots develop . if you are just doing patch work and over seeding it should be ok. I wouldnt do a whole lawn from seed after early october. Throw down a root builder . something low in Nitrogen.
I love 0-10-10 or 0-15-15 if it has nitrogen make sure it is slow release
