I am beyond upset. I must not have latched my coop door good enough last night. When I went out this morning to let my Chickens out.

One of the coop doors had blown open. My Brown orp Hen is missing.

I have searched all over. I can't find her.... She is so sweet. I am sick to my stomack. I have two brown orp Rooster and No Brown Hen...CRAP! I can still use my black orp Hen to get 50% brown. But, REALLY! I only have one pure black orp hen. Not a great way to start my day...

Now I have to figure out if any other Chickens a missing.....
I really hope you find her!

Did you look UP? Could she be hiding on a rafter or something? Any feather signs of an attack?
I was looking at chicken breeds on a site last night. I came to something called 'battery hens'. I have never heard of such a thing. People adopt them? I guess they are the hens that large egg producers use in cramped cages and forced to molt? Does that still happen here in the US? Forced molting- I stupidly thought they turned lights on all day to stress them out to force them to molt but I guess what actually happens is they starve the chickens for a week or 2 to stress them out and force them to molt. Does this REALLY still happen here in the US? I love my chickens, I love animals, I also love to eat said chickens...but that seems so doggone mean. Is that what USED to happen? Do egg farms REALLY still this? I am horrified if so.
Yup, that's where the grocery store eggs come from. Another reason I'm thankful to have my own flock.

Winter is Coming!

I spent some time today switching over to the rainy day feeders.
it sure is.. upper 30's maybe 40 here rain feels like ice water . Calling for a dusting of snow overnight. we shall see. it does have that feel out there though. if you live up here you know what that feel is lol

Just wanted to say hi. I'm in Roseville and am a first-time chicken owner. Just got 6 bantams and a little backyard coop. :) They're about 4 months old and pretty cute. Glad to find this site. I'm typically on COTH (horse forum) and now have another forum to take up all my time!

Haha. I would be very scared if I looked out and saw 200 chickens crammed in my yard. :D Think I'll stay in the single digits, at least for now!
