Last week I found a broody Hen hiding in the bushes. She had about a dozen eggs under her. I moved her to a broody box in hopes she would continue sitting.
NOPE! She freaked out. She no longer wanted ANYTHING to do with all those eggs. At this point the eggs had gotten fairly cold. I brought them in the house and candled them. The eggs were dark green. Very hard to candle. I could see growth, but couldn't tell if they were still alive. I went ahead a put them in the incubator for the heck of it. I check them a few times during the week to see if I could see anything. I thought I saw movement in one. I didn't know if it was wishful thinking. So I put them back in and thought I would give it a few more days... Today I came home to 5 chicks chirping around in the hatchery ...

That was a unexpected surprise ...I will give the other eggs a few more days..

I had the same thing happen with the eggs I found hidden in the feeder under a little serama hen. She had 10 under her! I moved her and the eggs..............she was done. I wish it was always so easy to break a broody. Anyway, after about 12 hours I pulled the eggs and put them in the incubator. They were day 3 (in the incubator) last night and I could see veining in some of them.

I am at a quandary. Do I build more pens??? or let a project go???? I am quite sure I am asking the wrong group of people, but I think I will like your answer better than if I ask my DH

I am a backyard chickenkeeper in Livermore, Ca. I have a hen who goes broody sometimes, so I buy eggs to put under her so she can fulfill her desire to be a momma. Unfortunately, I can only keep so many chickens, being in city limits, and the boys definitely have to go! Right now I have an 11 week old black cochin frizzle cockerel who has decided it's time to crow! Curly Sam needs a new home asap. Please let me know if you can take my handsome little guy. I would love to keep him, but could do without the police knocking on my door.

Ron, that's wonderful that you got such great feedback on your RIRs, especially from Mr. Red himself!


We can still work out something here for your roosters. Maybe you could come out sometime and see what I have planned. Getting it built is slow due to Paul's schedule.

I'm going to town today and could drop off your lard. You can leave an ice chest out or something. Email or call me to discuss.

Has anyone ever purchased coops from CConly.com? I am considering it but afraid they were difficult to put together, or poor quality. It seems whenever I have one build, it cost me so much more than I think it will so it might be nice to know exactly what it will cost upfront...

Ron, the only reason I know its a boy is Iggy the worlds weirdest chicken has a hard feather sex link. not ALL his boys are hard feathered, but if it has hard ( non silked) feathers its 100% male. I was no longer letting him breed because of the feather issue until I realized they were all boys and I can get my boy girl raito to about 70% for people who want silkie or showgirls. I am still not 100% sure, its only been a year and I have never heard of anything like it in other chickens. But I take roosters back, and I ask people and no one has a hard featherd girl yet. Plus, all his sisters were silked, he is the only one one with the weird gene.

You people are such amazing photographers, its awesome! I'm sorry coop and miss molly about the missing chicks, its sad . I'm glad you are feeling chipper Cheryl seeing your girls out in the world having babies for other people.

Zoo its so exciting to see your girls starting to perma lay. I cant BELIEVE your ducks lay in the coop, your magic.

I have the same problem as you. I did have Animal Control leave a nice note for me in September.

I hope you find a nice home for him.
