California Qail Questions..

Here come the nay sayers, trust me it is not a good idea. What works for you might not work for someone else. Man they should make the thread where the guy almost lost his bird a sticky... But please quit misinforming people!

Maybe to re-focus my post, What I am wanting to know is how close I can come to these being near my poultry. Is coryza really spread through feces? I am pretty strict on my bio security, and knowing more about this specific variety of quail will help me keep them healthy and secure. Because, as I said, I havent had problems with the bobwhites, but bobwhites are not californias! They are also not 20 bucks a pair, either!

Hmm ok.. I guess my system works then.. I may be what you call "OCD" about my biosecurity.. Nothing from the outside comes in, and sanitation, sanitation, sanitation on the inside! haha..

MOST SPREAD THROUGH FECES CONTAMINATION OR DROPLET CONTAMINATION... MEANING ITS SPREAD WHEN THE BIRD COUGHS OR SNEEZES BY MICROSCOPIC DROPLETS SUSPENDED IN THE AIR THE BIRD EXPELLED IN SAID COUGH OR SNEEZE. IN CLOSE PROXIMETY A SOLID WALL CONSTRUCTION OR OTHER MOISTURE PROOF BARRIER WILL PROVIDE ADDITION PROTECTION. YES VALLEYS ARE AS SUSCEPTIBLE(MORE SO THAN SOME) TO DISEASE TRANSFER... THEY CAN BE A TAD MORE FRAIL THAN BOBS IF THAT HELPS?

In the wild Valley Quail breed in pairs. The run wild all around my place. I have keep them in the past and sometimes you can get a 1:2or3 rato. But I have also had the domantent hen kill or hurt other hens. I have also had males only cover one hen and not others in the pen. The best time I had was when the hen layed one nest and the male set the nest, and then have the hen sit a 2nd nest at the same time. 18 little valley quail within the same week.

diseases transfer through air, so better stop breathing while you are at it! LOL

I raise Californian "valley" quail. I have them in a covey but within the covey you can see them pairing with their mates. It's really neat. I have no issues with disease as I keep everything clean and have a closed flock anyways.
