I just lost a SBEL on Wednesday and this Legbar has been like this for a few days...

The birds will try to hide health problems as long as possible. By the time we are able to identify it, they need some help. Occasionally the problem is readily resolved by a vet - it could require a combination of oxygen, or hydration, or meds. As recently posted by someone else, an avian vet, preferably experienced with chickens, is trained to differentiate between possible conditions.

I agree with Phage, it is difficult to sex BLRW for a few months.
Here's my "boy" at 8 weeks, thankfully no one took "him" because a year later she's sitting on eggs that are due to hatch today!

As info only can you describe what the symptoms were of your lost SBEL and what symptoms your Legbar is experiencing? Is it general listlessness, loss of appetite, loss of movements, sneezing/wheezing, or ?? If there's no paralysis it's probably not Marek's or the other paralytic diseases and you may be looking at something bacterial. My Silkie lost her appetite and was very subdued after contracting a digestive bacteria - she was my chow hound and for her to not eat was a red flag - had to take her to the vet.

We lost a listless 12-week pullet shipped to us with worms and we couldn't save her but her sister was hardier and survived after the worm treatment. Not all breeders are the same so buyer beware!

Gosh! If I lost 2 chickens that would be HALF my flock. I'm almost forced to go to the vet or I wouldn't have any birds left LOL. I hope the balance of your birds continue ok.

Let me start off by introducing myself. My name is Melissa, I am a mom to 4 wonderful kids and 182 chickens and 1 duck. I have been trying to savedifferent animals since I was young. My kids are the same and they bring in all kinds of animals there last rescue was a cotton tail rabbit looked like it was weeks old we fed until it was big enough and let go, but I think we made a lifetime friend out of her she comes back every couple days for a carrot


I Started raising chickens and that led into rescuing chickens and Ducks.I rescue them help them get healthy and stay healthy enough to be rehomed. When a family comes to pick up Chickens, I talk to them awhile about how I take care of them and how to keep them healthy and let them know to call me they need any help.I am proud to say I have never had any of the chickens that found a home come back to me.

I only medicate any of the poultry that comes in with Apple Cider Vinegar, Garlic and Cayenne Pepper which all has very good healing agents and vitamins. I rarely lose any chickens or ducks

My main goal is to build a bigger coop and get get some more nesting boxs

A recent presentation by UC Davis Veterinary Pathologist Dr. Janet Moore and her assistant Jill listed the typical causes of death (as seen at their lab? in southern California?). After predation, Marek's was number one, while bacterial infections were also significant (respiratory system, digestive system, ?) .

Hi from Tehachapi...my family and I are new to raising chickens. We have 6 chickens that almost 3 months old. We also had 2 Bantam Barred Rock chicks that are around 6 weeks old. Sadly a few days ago our dog slipped into the part of our property where we let the chickens free range and killed 1 of the 2 BBR. The remaining BBR is trying to become part of the older flock but the alpha hen won't have anything to do with her...no matter how hard the little Bantam tries. My family and I have become very protective of her. The kids have named her Pepper and she will jump up in there laps and go to sleep. She is also trying to attach herself two our 1 month old baby goslings...I worry that when the baby geese become older they will hurt her. So my question is does any one have a Bantam Rooster they would be willing to sell. I'm hopeful this would help our little bannie by giving her a mate. Unless someone here would advise against this.
