Deb: I hadn't thought about swamp cooler. Good idea. My coop/run will have some shade & I plan on spraying the sand on the run. Hopefully it will cool off enough at night so the fan will be enough. I've been reading Hobby Farms Chickens magazine & they even suggested ice in their waterers. I just retired from teaching, so I can do that on really hot days! Where r u in high desert? I've done a ton of winter endurance rides on my horse Taz in Ridgecrest, Coso Junction, & Lancaster. Very pretty.

I have family in Ridgecrest. Uncle Mitch was the police chief there a very very long time ago... back when gasoline rationing was going on.

I am in the High desert in San Diego County ... which qualifies as "southren" Southren California...

Not nearly as hot as the Mojave for certain. I am at 3200 feet just about half way between the ocean and the Sea of Cortez. Its a small nubbin of the Sonoran desert so we have similar flora and fauna here. Lots of medicinals on my property but its mostly Chaparal... Chamise, ribbonwood or Redshank and greesewood... some manzanita. So compared to the deserts you are used to very lush. Sometime in the 1920s or before it was a Cedar forest then there was a huge firestorm that took it all. and it never grew back.

Here is my land from the easement that pases through it.

My house is above the darkest green bushes.... you cannot see it from the road.

I had a dream once of riding the Tevis.... Back in the late 60s and early 70s I was putting a good twenty five mile ride on a Saturday or Sunday every week. My thoughts when I bred my Standardbred mare to an Arab Stallion was for endurance. During the process of him growing up I discovered driving and never went back.... LOL. I tell you My Marc had a killer trot that would pass most at a canter...

I have only been on one Competitive trail ride that was fun. It was a training ride so not so long just to give people the idea of what to expect.

Wow. Beautiful! It looks a lot like Los Padres National Forest on the Grapevine. Also like some of the terrain up in the higher elevations of Cuyama. People who think the desert is barren have never been out in it, or seen the high desert like your home. I've quit endurance. My last ride I had my 1st pull ever. My poor horse just hit the wall. That had never happened before. When I looked at him I knew I had to pull him at lunch. I'm so thankful I did he was just fine the next day, but he felt so bad that day. I decided I wasn't going to do that to my horse again. He & I are getting older, so we just like to trail ride now

My Uncle Mitch and Aunt Hellen had a place in Inyokern.... I think it was five acres. I was only there in the winter time but I loved it.... He built it himself a cinderblock two bed one bath. They had a horse some chickens and goats.... it was a wonderful place.... Very cold in the wintertime and windswept.

We have always lived in desert or high desert. First Colton CA which people dont realize but is desert. Then we moved to Roswell NM which was high desert... Then Las Vegas. When we moved to San Diego it was the wettest climate of them all. I had never seen fog.

These roads around here are perfect for driving or riding.... for what its worth a good trail vehicle can be pulled through any jeep trail. But as long as you get permission to cross through on th easements you can ride as far as Mexico and follow the Border for Miles. The next property over is twenty acres and after that is BLM land that goes on either side of the railroad tracks. Havent been out there but dearly wish to go some day. I need a helper in order to hitch and drive but it would be doable even with a totally unfit horse.

To the right of the mailbox is the beginning of my driveway. Between the mail box and the small windmill is another road wide enough for a semi... Overgrown on the sides but still wide enough. to the left of the windmill is my neighbors driveway the roads are DG No rocks for the most part....

Its beautiful country I love it the top is north... South east corner could be another homesite but I dont want to mess with the land more than it already has. I hope to cross fence a litte around the house so I can have some pasture area.... but I am too old for farming... I just want to raise my chickens and Guinea fowl and have a couple of goats and maybe get my horse a companion... eventually.

I am 59. and right now I cant live there because I am living with my 98 year old grandmother for now.

Just beautiful. You're lucky to have much land to ride/hike in. It's neat your grandmother is still alive. I lost all my grandparents a long time ago. I am 61

Sorry you had to pull your horse out of that last ride.... but I admire your skill and knowledge to make that decision....

All I have is Grandma and Mom and my son... four generations. When I can move back I will have to Dart mom and bring her with me. She loves the place but she loves TV, and Convenience stores, and Telephone....

My mom just moved to Oklahoma to live with my sister. My sister is 54, divorced, & has health problems. My mom is 84 & my niece & nephew are already calling her the general! I'd probably have to dart my mom, too:) mom has been in California with me & my family. I think she's missed my sister & her other grandchildren.

Regarding my horse, I was riding very slowly. I was actually in last place for the 50 mile ride, so I wasn't riding too fast... he just didn't feel good. He just looked so bad. I felt so guilty. I half killed my horse for a stupid t-shirt!

Hey there!!

I'm super excited to add some Welsummers to my flock this Spring, so, I'm searching around for some hatching eggs. I live in SoCal & would love to receive them early March 2015.

Any suggestions on where to start looking would be MUCH appreciated - thanks!!

I got my wellies from RedWing.... But they only sell to feed stores. They were egg layin machines. nice part is you can order through a feed store exactly what you want....

I couldnt afford breeder eggs.
