It already has gotten up to 113 degrees F here in Norco, California.
My ladies (and a gentleman

) had a large coop and large chicken run, plenty of shade
still hot as heck in the shade

In efforts to get them to cool down, I tried sitting out shallow pan of water
Frozen strawberries, --- no one cares for them
left out gallon ziplock bags with ice (thought maybe they would lay on them) -- no one even inspected the bags

and even resorted to hosing them down... I am now enemy #1 for spraying them down......

I just feel so bad seeing them panting

We put out a little Ramakin dish with ice cubes in water in the shade under their new patio-covered coop -- our 3 hens liked the little Ramakin dish and the ice cubes puzzled them but they LOVED the cold water. For some reason they ignored the nipple valve waterers today and went for the small open bowl of iced water. So-o-o-o happy the contractor got the patio roof over the coop done before the heatwave hit! It'll be nice to be able to collect eggs sheltered during rainy days too. A couple steps from the sliding kitchen door (far right) to the egg box -- took me only 51/2 years to plan this!

Mine did ok for the heat...but i think i have one whos going to die. One of my younger chicks a golden laced orpington is making me worry shes in the bathroom as i was worried. I have rinced her down twice but shes so week i hope she makes it but im kinda doubtful. Shes at that phase where shez loosing the fuzz and has feathers she looks beat up. I had an adult chicken i was worried about but shes up and about after i put her in there water dish. I can see the fire from my backyard but its not that close. I hope my chick doesnt die. She was $25. Plus the $45 for the 3 chicks my momma hen killed. That would be $70 down the drain in one month. Sometimed chicken keeping sucks. Other than brunging them in the house there was little i could do.

sounds like there is something else going on with your chick... I hope someone with more knowledge than me can offer up some suggestions.

That's a great design.

Thank you! Unfortunately, we lost one on Sunday. The coop and nests usually don't get hot, but it was hot on Sunday. Our hen died in the nest. I think she was probably straining to lay and got a bit too stressed with the heat. She's a special needs hen with a limp, so it takes extra effort and exertion for her to do just about everything. Sigh. She was an awesome hen.
