Yes!!! In Simi they have added to the rules that if you are part of 4=H in any way and that you have at least a 5000 sq ft lot, you can keep up to 6 hens. Since I"m on 2 acres, the compliance officer said that nobody was EVER going to come up and count my chickens, so he didn't feel I needed to stop at 6. He also said, as long as my daughter is in 4H then if they get a complaint about my chickens, they just tell the caller that I'm allowed to have them.

What's the zoning like in your area. I believe that most of Los Angeles have pretty easy chicken laws. In most cities you are even allowed to have roosters.

Is SGV still part of Los Angeles county?

Yes, SGV is L.A. County. JMO but I think anything over an acre SHOULD have more than adequate space for poultry and maybe even a goat or miniature cow -- but I believe you are correct about the minimum 5,000 sq ft lot which is exactly what I'm at. My city is in L.A. County so I can have up to 5 hens/no roos, San Dimas is a horse community so they can have backyard chickens, Baldwin Park city does not allow chickens, El Monte is a poultry community with egg packing plants and some large old properties that can have poultry and even larger livestock -- the laws vary from city to city in East SGV. But no matter what the zone laws are in anyone's city, if a neighbor complains then a flock is subject to being disbanded. It happened to my friend who pushed the limits of how many hens she could have, a contentious neighbor complained to the city, and the city disbanded her because her coop did not clear the required distance from buildings -- although the city said she could have chickens the coops had to also be able to meet the distance required. I'm so glad you are able to have poultry - you had quite a roller coaster ride!

Hi Jessimom,
I live some distance from you in southern California but it is very drivable. How big is your frizzled roo? I have white brahmas, which get to be big birds. I have a bachelor area set up for one of the roosters who was too intimidated by the other roosters (I had 10 cockerels and 2 hens from 12 chicks) and was thinking of trying to integrate him back in the flock now that I got rid of 8 roosters. I'm not sure if he would work with our flock since I only have 2 hens. However, he really is a nice looking bird.

Sorry 1quiter, I didn't get any interest in him, so I dropped him off at Golden State Hay in Santa Paula on Friday. I'm sure they still have him. I have brought about 50 roosters to them and I saw a few that I had dropped off months ago, still running around their yard. He was the largest roo that I had, but then again I've been getting rid of them as soon as they start crowing, and he was free ranged up in Green Valley for the past 3 months. So, he had time to mature.

I have about 10 more roos to get rid of. No frizzled ones though. I have a BCM roo, a beautiful White roo with just a couple of black feathers in his tail, a BUNCH of white EE roos, An Ayam Cemani roo, a blue, a black and a white silkie roos, and I'm sure quite a few others. The Ayam Cemani roo is the only one I want to sell. The rest are free to the takers. We've culled 8 so far and have decided it's too much work.

Again, if you really want him, I can call GSH and see if they still have him and will pick him up for you.

Kathy

Jessimom, thanks for the offer to pick him up. However, if he has a home then I really don't need any more roosters. I'm trying get get more hens. We bought 6 chicks but it takes quite a while for the brahmas to mature so I may have another batch of almost all roosters. Hope you find a home for the others. Too many roosters can be really loud and there are neighbors who are pretty close.

No, didn't find a home, just found a feed store that takes mine. It's out in an area that is more rural, so I"m sure most of them end up as dinner. I have WAY, way too many chickens, so at some point I will be trying to sell the "extras". Since I can't have roosters, I just like have 1 of each type of chicken. And I like a rainbow egg basket. I have a Buff Brahma, Cochins, EE, BCM, AC, Seabrights, Silkies, Orpingtons, Salmon Favorelles (my favorite), and so many others. I have dark green, dark brown, light green, light blue, salmon, beige, pink and tan colored eggs. I'd love to find a dark blue layer. I have about 20 that are of laying age, about another 20 getting there, and a bunch of babies. I've weeded out MO I wish you lots of girls with your Brahmas, and yes it seems like FOREVER to mature!!

Sorry, I checked with my husband and he thinks we have enough roosters already...:(

Yes, that sounds like a LOT of chickens. I don't think I could deal with that many but it sounds fun to have a huge variety of eggs.

100F today and no one was home so my dad stopped by to check on the birds for me. He was so excited about checking on the birds he went above and beyond and checked the egg boxes too. He texted me in his excitement! He found EIGHT EGGS and brought them inside for me.

I have only six hens so....

Yup. I got home and found eight wooden and ceramic eggs sitting proudly in a little basket on the counter.

Oh dad. :)
