Has anyone in So-Cal experiencing there birds getting sick. My poor little d'anver hens lost there man and one sex link yesterday. I have others sick too but hopefully making a turn for the better with treatment. Others in my local area having illnesses too. Trying to see if widespread or just localized to Tehachapi.

what symptoms are being displayed? Have you posted on the EMERGENCIES/DISEASES/CURES thread???

Yeah I have a post on diseases and illnesses getting some feedback for treatment. The symptoms started with my leghorns making a gurgling sound then my Americauna and hit hard on my bantams. With only the bantams getting nasal discharge and swollen eyes. Larger fowl was just lathargic but still eating.

Do you have a vet that sees birds? When something hits that I can't diagnose I rush to the vet so I don't administer the wrong treatment. I have a Silkie with CRD issues from mild head-shaking to heavy wheezing that I think she won't make it thru the night and have to rush her to the vet at that point -- just lucky the other birds have been resistant enough not to come down. Unfortunately with viruses or bacterial issues they can spread to other birds. Some birds with strong immune systems can resist while others can be more weakened because of prolific egg-laying, molting, broodiness, etc. I lost a prolific egg-layer during our long brutal summer heatwave and lost a juvenile Marek's survivor (Blue Wheaten Ameraucana) later to adult onset symptoms at 3-yrs-old. Our heatwaves have been merciless these past couple years so I'm not getting any more heavyweight or under-downed chicken breeds (EE, Ameraucana, Brahma, Orps, etc). My bantams always seem to do better than my large fowl at surviving. Every time I leave the vet's office he tells me to be sure to supplement the chickens' diet with vitamins. I've been supplementing with Rooster Booster vitamins, children's no-iron Poly-Vi-Sol, Selenium, calcium carbonate/oyster shell, besides a varied organic diet and garden produce but sometimes nature is what it is and we sadly lose some birds anyway. I hope you can get a correct diagnosis/treatment for your birds and all goes well.

Gurgling, swollen eyes and nasal discharge sound like a bacterial respiratory infection. These include coryza and mycoplasma. Neither are good as I believe once they have contact with the disease, they become life long carriers even if they never show many symptoms.

Yep, life-long carriers. In fact, most backyard flocks ARE carriers unaware -- it's just that not every flock will exhibit the symptoms but most USA backyard flocks are carriers of one or more dormant maladies -- CRD/MS/MG, Marek's, etc etc. One of my Silkies chronically gets CRD symptoms at least once a year every year yet the others have always been resistant to coming down with any symptoms. I have to assume all the birds are carriers after having been around her all these years whether they show symptoms or not. This Silkie is my tiniest girl and I have to monitor her at every cold climate or rainy season and fortify her with extra Poly-Vi-Sol doses and make sure all the flock continuously receives chicken vitamins in addition to their fortified feed. With added supplements and catching her first sneeze or head-shake I know to make a vet visit right away. Last year she had to have nasal surgery because discharge blocked her nostrils. Other than these little yearly bouts of CRD she is a plucky little thing! She doesn't have the good sense to stay out of pouring rain and mud so have to keep her and the flock penned up on those days. Light intermittent sprinkles they can play but not in pouring muddy rain.

Status as of this morning: sebrite rooster getting better after two days of tylan 50 injections. Swelling in eyes and head went away along with discharge. D'anver hens doing better now too with injections. Once closed eye is now open and both eating and drinking normally in separate cage. Barred rock got her first injection yesterday and is still slow and barely eating. Lastly, my four brown leghorns are very active but make lots of gurgling sounds and will administer injections later today.
