Yes!!! In Simi they have added to the rules that if you are part of 4=H in any way and that you have at least a 5000 sq ft lot, you can keep up to 6 hens. Since I"m on 2 acres, the compliance officer said that nobody was EVER going to come up and count my chickens, so he didn't feel I needed to stop at 6. He also said, as long as my daughter is in 4H then if they get a complaint about my chickens, they just tell the caller that I'm allowed to have them.
What's the zoning like in your area. I believe that most of Los Angeles have pretty easy chicken laws. In most cities you are even allowed to have roosters.
Is SGV still part of Los Angeles county?
Yes, SGV is L.A. County. JMO but I think anything over an acre SHOULD have more than adequate space for poultry and maybe even a goat or miniature cow -- but I believe you are correct about the minimum 5,000 sq ft lot which is exactly what I'm at. My city is in L.A. County so I can have up to 5 hens/no roos, San Dimas is a horse community so they can have backyard chickens, Baldwin Park city does not allow chickens, El Monte is a poultry community with egg packing plants and some large old properties that can have poultry and even larger livestock -- the laws vary from city to city in East SGV. But no matter what the zone laws are in anyone's city, if a neighbor complains then a flock is subject to being disbanded. It happened to my friend who pushed the limits of how many hens she could have, a contentious neighbor complained to the city, and the city disbanded her because her coop did not clear the required distance from buildings -- although the city said she could have chickens the coops had to also be able to meet the distance required. I'm so glad you are able to have poultry - you had quite a roller coaster ride!
